Description

Domaine Leflaive’s Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon is one of Burgundy’s reference-point white wines: precise, deeply mineral, and unmistakably elegant. From one of the village’s most respected Premier Cru sites, this 2002 Chardonnay reflects the house’s long legacy of terroir-driven winemaking and its reputation for producing whites of remarkable purity and finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a pale golden color with a bright, youthful rim for its age. The bouquet is restrained at first, then opens with notes of white peach, lemon zest, crushed stone, flint, and subtle spice, with a cool, limestone-driven character that feels very Puligny. On the palate, the wine is taut and energetic, with fine acidity carrying flavors of citrus, apple, and stone fruit across a long, persistent finish. There is a sense of tension and reserve that suggests graceful evolution in bottle, and while it is already expressive, it still has the structure to continue aging well in a good cellar.

Production
Clavoillon is a Premier Cru vineyard in Puligny-Montrachet, where Domaine Leflaive’s holdings sit on prized limestone-rich soils that naturally favor precision, tension, and minerality. The domaine farms its vineyards biodynamically, with a strong emphasis on biodiversity and harmony with the rhythms of nature, while harvesting is carried out with close attention to ripeness and site expression. In the cellar, Leflaive combines tradition and modernity: fermentation and maturation are handled with great care, often in oak barrels with a measured use of new wood, and the wines are developed slowly to preserve detail and freshness. Temperature-controlled cellars and modern presses support a style that remains classic Burgundy in character but exceptionally refined in execution.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with refined dishes that echo its elegance, such as roast turbot, lobster, scallops, veal in a light cream sauce, or poultry with morels. It also works well with aged Comté or other nutty, savoury cheeses. Serve at around 10–12°C, and decanting is optional but can be helpful if the wine seems closed on opening.

Producer
Domaine Leflaive is one of Burgundy’s most celebrated white wine estates, based in Puligny-Montrachet and rooted in a family history that reaches back centuries in the village. The domaine was formally established by Joseph Leflaive in 1905 and expanded through the acquisition of some of the region’s greatest Chardonnay sites, helping build its exceptional reputation. A pioneer of organic and then biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy, Leflaive has played a major role in shaping modern white Burgundy. Under the influence of Anne-Claude Leflaive, the estate became especially renowned for its visionary approach, and today it continues under the leadership of Brice de La Morandière, carrying forward one of the most admired names in the region.
