Description
Domaine Leflaive Montrachet Grand Cru 2000 is the kind of white Burgundy that defines greatness: rare, complete, and profoundly expressive. Sourced from the legendary Montrachet vineyard and crafted by one of Burgundy’s most revered producers, it is a benchmark Chardonnay that has long held cult status among collectors and wine lovers alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows impressive depth and an evolved golden hue that hints at its age and class. The bouquet is layered with mature citrus, white peach, candied lemon, honey, exotic fruit, toasted hazelnuts, butter, brioche, and a distinct chalky mineral edge. On the palate, it is broad and velvety yet remarkably precise, with vibrant acidity carrying flavors of stone fruit, citrus cream, acacia honey, roasted nuts, and subtle limestone undertones.
The finish is long, powerful, and finely etched, leaving a persistent impression of tension and purity. After more than two decades in bottle, the wine is beautifully integrated and fully in its tertiary phase, though it remains capable of further graceful development for those fortunate enough to cellar it longer.
Production
Montrachet is one of the most celebrated Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy, known for its exceptional limestone-rich soils and ideal exposition for producing world-class Chardonnay. Domaine Leflaive has been one of the estate’s great interpreters for generations, farming its vineyards with meticulous care and harvesting by hand to preserve the quality of the fruit. The wine is vinified with a focus on purity, balance, and the expression of terroir, allowing the grandeur of Montrachet to shine through with clarity and precision.
Food & Serving
This is an extraordinary wine best served with refined dishes such as lobster, turbot, scallops, truffle risotto, roasted chicken with cream sauce, or poultry with morels. Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 12–14°C, to let the aromatics and texture unfold fully. Decanting is recommended for a short time if the bottle is opened young, though for a mature vintage like 2000, a gentle splash decant or careful opening shortly before service is usually sufficient.
Producer
Domaine Leflaive is one of the most iconic names in Burgundy, especially in the world of white wine, and is widely regarded as a master of Chardonnay. Based in Puligny-Montrachet, the domaine has helped define the benchmark for great white Burgundy through its precision, biodynamic farming, and unwavering commitment to terroir expression. Its wines, particularly from top sites like Montrachet, have earned international acclaim and remain among the most sought-after in the region.
