Description
Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2002 is a benchmark white Burgundy and a superb example of why Domaine Leflaive is regarded among the world’s most prestigious Chardonnay producers. From one of the Côte de Beaune’s most celebrated Grand Cru vineyards, it combines monumental power with remarkable precision and elegance. After more than two decades in bottle, this vintage now shows the depth and complexity that define the very best mature white Burgundies.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a rich golden hue, hinting at its maturity and concentration. The nose is layered and expressive, unfolding with ripe citrus, dried mango, peach, honey, toasted hazelnuts, marzipan, butter, white flowers, and a distinct chalky mineral note.
The palate is full-bodied and intense, with impressive richness balanced by lively acidity and a clear mineral backbone. Flavors move through stone fruit, lemon cream, roasted nuts, and subtle spice, finishing with exceptional length and a sense of effortless depth. Drinking beautifully now, it still has the structure and freshness to remain compelling, though its tertiary notes will continue to evolve over time.
Production
Bâtard-Montrachet is one of Burgundy’s most revered Grand Cru sites, prized for its ability to produce Chardonnay with both grandeur and finesse. Domaine Leflaive’s parcels here benefit from the limestone-rich soils of the Côte de Beaune, which contribute the vineyard’s signature mineral tension and refinement. The 2002 vintage, widely considered an excellent year for white Burgundy, was harvested with care and vinified in the domaine’s precision-driven style, allowing the wine’s natural concentration and purity to shine through.
Food & Serving
This is a wine for refined dishes such as lobster, scallops, turbot, roasted chicken with cream sauce, or veal with morels. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-based preparations and aged Comté. Serve at around 12°C; decanting is recommended if the bottle has been recently opened, though an older bottle may be best handled gently and tasted after a short period of air.
Producer
Founded in Puligny-Montrachet, Domaine Leflaive has become one of the defining names in white Burgundy and a reference point for world-class Chardonnay. The estate is especially admired for its meticulous vineyard work and its commitment to expressing terroir with purity and precision. Over the years, it has earned an international reputation for producing some of the most sought-after and collectible wines in Bourgogne.
