Description
Domaine Launay-Horiot Clos Blanc 2021 is a refined Premier Cru Pommard that captures the masculine, earthy soul of this famed Burgundy village. Sourced from the Clos Blanc vineyard, this wine marries structure and depth with a surprisingly elegant, detailed finish. It’s a classic expression of Pommard terroir, crafted in a style built for both immediate pleasure and graceful aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Clos Blanc shows a deep, shimmering ruby color with youthful brightness at the rim. The nose opens with a distinctly earthy, almost autumnal bouquet—think damp forest floor and wet undergrowth—woven together with dark berry fruit.
On the palate, the wine is firm yet refined, offering layers of black cherry, blackberry and plum framed by notes of pain d’épices (spiced bread), crushed black pepper and subtle savory undertones. The tannins are well-structured but polished, giving the wine a confident, masculine spine without feeling harsh. The finish is finely etched and persistent, carrying spice and dark fruit long after the last sip. Enjoyable now with a bit of air, it has the balance and concentration to evolve beautifully over 12 to 15 years.
Production
Clos Blanc is a Premier Cru site in Pommard, rooted in classic Burgundian limestone-clay soils that naturally yield wines of depth, minerality and firm structure. Domaine Launay-Horiot typically works with meticulous hand-harvesting, allowing only optimally ripe, healthy Pinot Noir grapes to reach the cellar. Vinification is traditional and terroir-focused: careful sorting of the fruit, temperature-controlled fermentation, and a considered use of oak maturation to enhance complexity and texture without overwhelming the vineyard character. The result is a wine that speaks clearly of Pommard and Clos Blanc—structured, earthy and profound.
Food & Serving
This Pommard Clos Blanc 2021 is a natural match for rich, savory dishes such as roast duck, lamb chops with herbs, braised beef, game birds or mushroom-based plates like wild mushroom risotto or porcini tagliatelle. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and earthy, truffle-inflected cuisine. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to bring out its aromatic detail and balance. Decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth will help soften the tannins and open up the complex bouquet.
