Domaine la Soumade Rasteau 2021 Magnum offers the depth and character of a top Rhône red at a far more approachable level than many of its famous neighbors. Made from old vines in Rasteau and named by winemaker Frédéric Roméro after his daughter, this is a serious, terroir-driven wine that reflects just how far the appellation has come in the last two decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark color that hints at the concentration to come. The nose is generous and layered, with wild raspberries, cherry, chocolate, cedar, liquorice, and a subtle touch of black truffle. On the palate, it is powerful yet beautifully balanced, combining ripe Grenache fruit with Syrah’s structure and spice. The wine unfolds in layers, with plenty of depth and a long, composed finish. It has excellent ageing potential and should continue to improve over the next few years.

Production
The wine comes from old vines between 50 and 100 years of age, planted in Rasteau in the southern Rhône. The blend is 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, sourced from vineyards that bring both concentration and complexity to the final wine. After fermentation, it is matured for 15 months in a nearly new foudre, a large oak cask of around 4,000 liters, which adds texture and integration without overwhelming the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a natural match for roasted lamb, beef, game, and richly flavored dishes such as braised short ribs or duck with herbs. It also works well with mature hard cheeses and Mediterranean dishes with olives and rosemary. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young.
