Description
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron’s 2023 Romanée-Saint-Vivant is a rare Grand Cru Burgundy from one of the most prestigious vineyards in Vosne-Romanée. Made from Pinot Noir and shaped by the Confuron family’s traditional approach, it combines remarkable richness and concentration with the elegance and complexity expected from this celebrated Côte de Nuits climat.
Tasting Notes
Deeply coloured and immediately expressive, the wine offers a lavish, complex nose marked by ripe dark berries, violets, aromatic spices and subtle savoury nuances. On the palate it is full-bodied, rich and wonderfully concentrated, with layers of black fruit, silky texture and finely integrated tannins. Despite its opulence, the wine retains freshness and balance, leading to a long, persistent finish.
This is a powerful yet refined Burgundy with excellent cellaring potential. It can be enjoyed after some time in the bottle, but should develop greater depth, aromatic complexity and harmony over the next 10–20 years, with the best bottles rewarding considerably longer ageing under suitable conditions.
Production
Romanée-Saint-Vivant is a Grand Cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée, renowned for producing deeply perfumed and exceptionally complex Pinot Noir. Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron farms vineyards across 12 appellations in the Côte de Nuits, using traditional methods for its red wines. The grapes are harvested with care and the wine is matured in oak, with Grand Cru cuvées typically receiving 80–100% new barrels. It is fined with egg whites and bottled without filtration, preserving the wine’s texture, concentration and character.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the wine to come gently up to temperature. A young bottle will benefit from decanting for around 1–2 hours, while a mature vintage is best poured carefully off its sediment with only brief aeration. Its richness and structure make it an excellent match for roast pigeon, duck, venison, beef fillet, game birds, or refined dishes featuring mushrooms and truffles.
Producer
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron is a highly regarded family domaine in the Côte de Nuits. Sophie and Alain Meunier-Confuron took over the estate in 1988 and have continued to cultivate its vineyards with a combination of traditional winemaking and meticulous attention to detail. The domaine covers approximately 8 hectares across 12 appellations, and its wines are known for their deep colour, impressive concentration and ability to age. Alain is closely involved in the vineyards, while Sophie oversees the commercial and administrative side of the estate.
