Description
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron’s Clos de Vougeot is a distinguished Grand Cru from Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, produced by a respected family domaine with a particular focus on depth, concentration and terroir expression. Clos de Vougeot is one of Burgundy’s most historically important vineyards, originally developed by Cistercian monks and renowned for producing powerful, age-worthy Pinot Noir.
Tasting Notes
In its youth, this 2024 Clos de Vougeot is expected to show a deep ruby-red colour and an intense, structured character. The nose should gradually reveal ripe red and dark fruit alongside floral notes, subtle spice and the earthy, mineral nuances associated with its terroir. On the palate, it is concentrated and full-bodied, with firm but refined tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, persistent finish.
With bottle age, the wine’s primary fruit will develop into more complex aromas of spice, forest floor and savoury terroir. It is particularly rewarding when mature, typically between seven and 15 years of age, although a well-stored bottle should continue to evolve beyond that window. This is a wine for special occasions and for those who appreciate the depth and longevity of great Burgundy.
Production
The wine comes from the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru in the Côte de Nuits, a walled historic vineyard whose varied soils contribute to the appellation’s combination of power, structure and complexity. Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron follows a traditional red-wine vinification, allowing the character of the fruit and site to take centre stage. The Grand Cru is matured in oak barrels, with approximately 80–100% new oak, then fined with egg whites and bottled without filtration to preserve its texture and concentration.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the wine to come gently up to temperature. A young bottle will benefit from decanting for around one to two hours, while a mature vintage should be handled more carefully and decanted only shortly before serving, if necessary. Its structure and depth make it a natural partner for roast poultry, game birds, veal, richly prepared white meats and tender cuts of beef. Serve with dishes that are flavourful but not overly spicy so the wine’s Burgundy character remains in focus.
Producer
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron has been owned and run by the Meunier-Confuron family since Sophie and Alain Meunier-Confuron took over in 1988. Based in the Côte de Nuits, the domaine farms approximately eight hectares across 12 appellations and is regarded as one of Burgundy’s leading estates. Alain is deeply devoted to the vineyards, while Sophie oversees the commercial and administrative side of the domaine. Their wines are known for their deep colour, impressive concentration and traditional, unfussy style.
