Description
Domaine Jean Grivot’s Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is a benchmark Burgundy from one of the commune’s most sought-after premier cru sites. Planted in a prized position between Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Richebourg, and Échezeaux, it combines depth, finesse, and a distinctly sensual style that has long made Les Suchots one of the most admired climats in the Côte de Nuits.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Noir typically shows a luminous ruby color with excellent depth. The nose is rich and layered, offering ripe red berries such as cherry, strawberry, and raspberry, lifted by floral nuances and subtle spice, with time revealing notes of leather, forest floor, smoke, and gentle oak accents like cocoa, cigar box, or vanilla.
The palate is silk-textured yet firmly structured, with generous, mature fruit supported by bright acidity and refined tannins. There is a beautiful balance of elegance and intensity, along with a chalky mineral thread that reflects the terroir. While already appealing in youth, Les Suchots has the concentration and harmony to age gracefully for many years, evolving toward truffle, undergrowth, oriental spice, and deeper, more complex fruit character.
Production
Les Suchots comes from a highly prized premier cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée, where deep clay-limestone soils and an excellent exposure help produce wines of remarkable fragrance and concentration. Domaine Jean Grivot typically vinifies the wine with full destemming, spontaneous fermentation, and maturation in French oak, with a proportion of new barrels used to add subtle spice without overpowering the fruit. This careful approach lets the vineyard’s natural power and precision remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with elegant, flavorful dishes such as duck breast, roast pigeon, veal tenderloin, game birds, porcini mushrooms, or truffle-infused cuisine. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about 30–60 minutes if the wine is still youthful; older bottles are best opened with care and only briefly decanted if needed.
Producer
Domaine Jean Grivot is one of Vosne-Romanée’s most respected family domaines, with a long-standing reputation for crafting polished, age-worthy Burgundy across some of the village’s finest parcels. Under successive generations of the Grivot family, the estate has built a strong standing in the region for precision, balance, and terroir expression, and its wines are consistently regarded among the most admired in the Côte de Nuits.
