Description
Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2006 comes from one of Vosne-Romanée’s most esteemed premier cru vineyards, prized for its ability to combine depth, precision, and unmistakable finesse. This is a beautifully poised Pinot Noir from a classic hillside climat, shaped by limestone and marl soils and a long reputation for producing wines of both elegance and age-worthy structure.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it should show a bright, refined ruby hue with the graceful translucency typical of mature Burgundy. The nose is layered and inviting, opening with red cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, then moving into floral notes of violet and rose petals, alongside earthy, mineral nuances and subtle spice from élevage.
On the palate, the wine balances ripe, juicy fruit with a firm, finely etched structure. The tannins are polished, the acidity keeps the wine vibrant, and the finish is long, mineral, and quietly powerful. While already expressive, this premier cru has the structure and balance to continue developing with additional bottle age, gaining more forest floor, dried flower, and spice complexity over time.
Production
Les Beaux Monts is a large and highly nuanced vineyard site on the upper slope of Vosne-Romanée, just above Échezeaux and near Les Brûlées, with variations across its upper and lower sections. The soils are rich in limestone and marl, and the vineyard’s elevation, exposure, and incline contribute to its signature mineral tension and aromatic lift. In the cellar, Jean Grivot typically works with full destemming, spontaneous fermentation, and maturation in French oak, with around 30–60% new barrels depending on the vintage, followed by a short period of tank aging before bottling.
Food & Serving
This wine is a natural match for refined dishes such as roast duck, squab, game birds, veal with mushrooms, or mushroom risotto. It also pairs well with truffled dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–17°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if opening it relatively young; for a more mature bottle like 2006, a gentle decant just before serving is usually enough.
