Description
Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2003 comes from one of the most prestigious premier cru climats in Vosne-Romanée, a hillside site prized for its elegance, depth, and unmistakable mineral spine. Crafted from Pinot Noir in a vintage that has given the wine extra richness and maturity, it combines classic Vosne finesse with the textural generosity that makes Grivot’s wines so admired.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2003 shows the polished, ruby-toned profile you would expect from mature Pinot Noir, with the depth and warmth of the vintage adding a more supple, inviting feel. The nose is layered and expressive, opening with red cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, then unfolding into violet, rose petal, earthy undertones, and subtle notes of toast, spice, and oak seasoning.
On the palate, the wine is generous yet precise, with ripe fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and a vivid mineral thread. Les Beaux Monts is known for its vertical, focused character, and here that translates into a long, refined finish with both energy and perfume. While it can be enjoyed now, the wine’s balance and structure suggest it still has the ability to develop more tertiary complexity with additional cellaring, gaining notes of forest floor, dried flowers, and sweet spice.
Production
Les Beaux Monts is a large and highly regarded Vosne-Romanée premier cru, sitting high on the slope above Échezeaux and close to Les Brûlées. Its calcareous, marl-rich soils, combined with altitude, exposure, and slope, create a terroir that naturally favors mineral drive, aromatic lift, and layered structure. Domaine Jean Grivot typically works with parcels across different parts of the climat, allowing the wine to reflect both the concentration of the lower slope and the cooler, more perfumed character of the upper sections.
In the cellar, the domaine uses full destemming and spontaneous fermentation, followed by around 15 months of élevage in French oak, including a proportion of new barrels. A short time in tank before bottling helps the wine settle and harmonize, preserving the site’s purity while adding polish and complexity.
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for refined dishes such as roast duck, quail, mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, or game birds with a light jus. It also pairs beautifully with lamb prepared simply with herbs or with soft, washed-rind cheeses. Serve at around 15–17°C, and if opened young or still tightly wound, decant gently for 30–60 minutes; a mature bottle may only need a short splash in the glass.
Producer
Domaine Jean Grivot is one of Vosne-Romanée’s most respected family domaines, with a long-standing reputation for producing wines of clarity, precision, and depth. Based in the heart of Burgundy, the domaine is especially prized for its holdings in top climats across the Côte de Nuits, where careful vineyard work and exacting cellar practices have made it a benchmark producer in the region. Its wines are widely recognized for combining classic Burgundian elegance with impressive aging potential.
