Description

Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2002 comes from one of Vosne-Romanée’s most celebrated premier cru sites, a classic slope of striking finesse and depth. The vineyard’s chalk and marl soils, elevated position, and refined exposure give this Pinot Noir a signature blend of mineral drive, aromatic complexity, and elegant structure. In 2002, this terroir produced a wine that speaks clearly of both place and the precision for which Domaine Jean Grivot is known.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a graceful, mature Pinot Noir profile with a ruby hue beginning to soften at the rim. The nose is layered with red cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry, lifted by violet and rose petal notes, then deepened by earthy, mineral tones and subtle spice from oak aging. On the palate, the wine is poised and precise, showing ripe red fruit wrapped in fine, polished tannins and bright acidity. Its texture is generous but never heavy, with a long, mineral finish that underscores the wine’s vertical, refined character. With age, it can evolve beautifully toward forest floor, dried flowers, sous-bois, and more delicate spice nuances.

Production
Les Beaux Monts is a substantial premier cru vineyard of around 28 hectares, stretching across both upper and lower slope sections above Échezeaux and near Les Brûlées. The differing altitudes and exposures create subtle site variation, but the common thread is a limestone- and marl-driven terroir that brings tension, depth, and clarity to the wine. Domaine Jean Grivot’s parcels are typically harvested with care and vinified to highlight the character of the site rather than heavy extraction. In the cellar, the wine is fully destemmed and fermented with native yeasts, then aged for around 15 months in French oak, typically with 30–60% new barrels. A short time in tank before bottling helps the wine settle and integrate, resulting in a polished, terroir-focused expression of Vosne-Romanée.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for refined dishes such as roast duck, squab, veal tenderloin, mushroom risotto, or truffled poultry. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses like Époisses or Comté. Serve at 16–18°C, and decanting is recommended if the bottle is opened relatively young; for a mature vintage like 2002, a gentle decant just before serving can help reveal its bouquet without stripping away delicate nuances.

Producer
Domaine Jean Grivot is one of Vosne-Romanée’s most respected family domaines, with a long-standing reputation for producing wines of precision, balance, and site expression. The estate has become a benchmark in Burgundy thanks to its careful vineyard work and a philosophy that favors purity and elegance over excess. Its premier cru wines, especially from Vosne-Romanée, are widely admired for their consistency, ageability, and distinctly classical Burgundian style.
