Description

Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées 2005 is a striking expression of one of Vosne-Romanée’s most characterful premier cru sites. Sourced from a south-facing parcel high on the slope just above the Grands Crus, it combines warmth, altitude, and precision in a way that gives the wine both power and finesse. Historically, Aux Brûlées is known for producing wines of notable depth and intensity, and this 2005 shows the kind of layered complexity that makes the site so admired.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Noir typically shows a deep ruby core with hints of garnet at the rim as it begins to evolve. The nose is expressive and complex, with aromas of ripe cherry, raspberry, and blackberry lifted by violet, rose petal, warm spice, earthy forest floor, and a subtle smoky edge. On the palate, the wine is broad and concentrated, with a dense fruit core, finely textured tannins, and a bright line of acidity that keeps everything in balance. It has the hallmark Vosne-Romanée elegance, but with more warmth and muscularity than many other premier crus from the village. The 2005 vintage has the structure to age beautifully, and the wine should continue to gain nuance over time, developing notes of truffle, dried flowers, game, and mineral complexity.

Production
The Aux Brûlées parcel sits on a prized south-facing slope in Vosne-Romanée, where excellent sun exposure and elevated position create ripe, concentrated fruit with a distinct sense of tension. At Domaine Jean Grivot, the grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted to preserve purity and quality, with vinification guided by natural yeasts and a focus on transparency to terroir. The wine is then matured for around 18 months in French oak barrels, with the proportion of new oak adjusted according to the character of the vintage.

Food & Serving
This is an ideal match for refined dishes with depth and earthy complexity, such as duck breast, roasted quail, veal tenderloin, mushroom risotto, or game birds with a light jus. It also works beautifully with dishes featuring truffle or root vegetables. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking it now, especially if you want to open up its aromatic layers.

Producer
Domaine Jean Grivot is one of the respected historic estates of Vosne-Romanée, with a long-standing reputation for producing Pinot Noir of elegance, precision, and aging potential. The estate has become an important reference point in Burgundy thanks to its commitment to careful vineyard work and expressive, terroir-driven winemaking. Under the Grivot family’s stewardship, it has earned acclaim for wines that combine classic structure with generous aromatic depth and consistency across top sites.
