Description
Domaine Jean Grivot’s Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées 1999 is a striking expression of one of the village’s most distinctive premier cru sites. Positioned high on the slope just above the grands crus, Aux Brûlées combines warmth, altitude, and south-facing exposure to produce a Pinot Noir of notable depth, power, and elegance. The 1999 vintage offers a particularly compelling snapshot of this terroir’s ability to deliver intensity without sacrificing refinement.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine typically shows a deep ruby colour with garnet reflections beginning to emerge with age. The nose is layered and expressive, unfolding with ripe cherry, raspberry, and blackberry, alongside violet, rose petal, subtle smoke, forest floor, and earthy spice. On the palate it is broad and textural, with concentrated dark fruit, finely woven tannins, and a vivid line of acidity that gives shape and lift to the wine’s richness.
As it matures, Aux Brûlées gains further complexity, developing notes of dried flowers, undergrowth, exotic spice, and a more pronounced mineral edge. This is a wine with excellent ageing potential, and in a well-stored bottle the 1999 vintage should continue to evolve beautifully, revealing greater nuance and harmony over time.
Production
Aux Brûlées sits on a prized south-facing parcel high on the Vosne-Romanée slope, where the combination of sun exposure and elevation helps create a wine of both ripeness and freshness. Domaine Jean Grivot tends the vines with careful attention to the heat and power of the site, and harvest is carried out later to ensure full phenolic maturity and to avoid an overly linear or austere style. The fruit is hand-harvested and sorted, then fermented with indigenous yeasts before spending around 18 months in French oak barrels, with the proportion of new oak adjusted according to the vintage.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with refined dishes that can match its depth and structure, such as roast duck, pigeon, venison, truffle risotto, or mushroom-based cuisine. It also works well with grilled lamb, game birds, and rich poultry preparations. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant gently if the bottle is showing youthful tightness or sediment; mature bottles may only need a brief aeration before serving.
Producer
Domaine Jean Grivot is one of Vosne-Romanée’s most respected producers, known for combining traditional Burgundian winemaking with a precision-focused approach in the vineyard and cellar. The estate has earned an outstanding reputation for producing terroir-driven wines that balance power, perfume, and finesse across its holdings in some of the Côte de Nuits’ most coveted appellations. Under the Grivot family, the domaine has become especially admired for the purity and consistency of its Pinot Noir wines.
