Description
Domaine Jean Grivot Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2005 is a refined and deeply terroir-driven expression of one of Burgundy’s most legendary vineyards. Made from Pinot Noir in the historic Clos de Vougeot, it combines power, precision, and aromatic depth in a style that reflects both the site’s prestige and the Grivot family’s meticulous craftsmanship.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep, vibrant ruby colour in the glass, with an aromatic profile that opens on red forest berries, cherry, and raspberry, lifted by floral notes, subtle herbs, and a gentle touch of spice from oak aging. With time, more earthy layers emerge: forest floor, mineral nuances, and a faint smoky complexity that adds depth and authenticity to the bouquet.
On the palate, it is structured and layered, with a concentrated yet elegant core of fruit. Bright acidity keeps the wine fresh and energetic, while the tannins are fine-grained, firm, and beautifully integrated. The finish is long and harmonious, and while the 2005 vintage already offers impressive balance, this Grand Cru has the concentration and structure to age gracefully for many more years, developing even greater complexity, softness, and tertiary nuance.
Production
This wine comes from old, densely planted Pinot Noir vines in Clos de Vougeot, where the soils are a complex patchwork of limestone, clay, and alluvial deposits. Domaine Jean Grivot’s holdings cover 1.86 hectares of contiguous vineyard on the mid-slope, a prized position that helps deliver balance, depth, and aromatic finesse. Harvesting is carried out with care to preserve fruit purity, and vinification typically includes traditional Burgundy methods with élevage in oak, often using a significant proportion of new barrels to add structure and subtle spice without masking the vineyard character.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru is a superb match for refined dishes such as roast duck, game birds, beef tenderloin, veal, or mushroom-based recipes like truffle risotto and wild mushroom tart. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if opening it young, as this can help the wine gradually reveal its full aromatic complexity and soften its structure.
Producer
Domaine Jean Grivot is one of Burgundy’s respected family domaines, known for producing precise, terroir-faithful wines across some of the region’s most sought-after appellations. Based in Vosne-Romanée, the estate has built a strong reputation for elegance, consistency, and careful vineyard work, with a style that balances concentration and finesse. Its holdings in Clos de Vougeot underline the domaine’s stature in the Côte de Nuits and its ability to craft wines of real depth and longevity.
