Description
Domaine Jacques Prieur’s Clos de Vougeot 2023 is a refined Grand Cru Burgundy with an appealing combination of vibrant cherry fruit, luxurious texture and powerful, spicy structure. Produced from Pinot Noir within the historic, walled Clos de Vougeot vineyard, it reflects both the elegance of the vintage and the depth expected from one of Burgundy’s most prestigious appellations.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, alluring ruby-red colour. Its expressive nose opens with fresh cherry and other bright red-fruit aromas, followed by more complex notes of toast, spice and liquorice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and intense, combining concentrated, fresh fruit with a beautifully enveloping texture. Rich, firm tannins provide structure, while the spicy finish adds depth and persistence.
With its combination of fruit, concentration and tannic backbone, this Clos de Vougeot has excellent ageing potential. It can be enjoyed after careful aeration in its youth, but should develop greater aromatic complexity and silkier texture over the next 10–20 years, and potentially longer under suitable cellar conditions.
Production
The grapes come from the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, a historic, enclosed vineyard in the Côte de Nuits known for producing powerful yet refined Pinot Noir. The fruit is harvested by hand and carefully sorted before approximately 45% is retained as whole clusters, with the remainder destemmed. Fermentation takes place for around 20 days at controlled temperature in open wooden vats, with twice-daily pump-overs during the active phase of alcoholic fermentation. The wine undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation and is matured entirely in oak barrels.
Food & Serving
Its depth and firm structure make this wine an excellent partner for refined dishes such as roast or braised beef, venison, lamb, duck and game birds. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffled preparations and mature, full-flavoured cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decanting is recommended when serving the wine young—around one to two hours should help open its fruit and spice, while older bottles should be handled gently and decanted only if necessary to remove sediment.
