Description
Domaine Hubert Lamy Chassagne-Montrachet La Goujonne 2021 is a beautifully expressive red Burgundy that combines perfume, purity and finesse. Brimming with aromas of plum, red berries, spice and a twist of orange zest, it offers an immediately charming, more delicate side of Chassagne compared to richer, sunnier vintages. This single-vineyard cuvée showcases the elegant potential of Pinot Noir from the southern Côte de Beaune in a cool, classical year.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 La Goujonne shows a vibrant, translucent ruby hue, hinting at its finesse-driven style. The nose is fragrant and lifted, with notes of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries and plums, layered with subtle baking spices, rose petals, a touch of forest floor and a bright citrus peel accent that adds energy and lift.
On the palate, the wine is medium to medium-plus in body, with a juicy core of red fruit that feels both vivid and finely etched. The tannins are silky yet lightly powdery, lending gentle structure without weighing the wine down. Fresh acidity keeps everything lively and mouthwatering, while the spice and citrus notes carry through into a long, refined finish. While the wine is already approachable and charming in youth, it should evolve gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining complexity and silkiness with short- to mid-term cellaring.
Production
La Goujonne comes from a single lieu-dit in Chassagne-Montrachet, where limestone-rich soils with layers of clay provide both tension and depth to Pinot Noir. The relatively cool 2021 growing season in Burgundy produced lower yields but grapes of excellent aromatic definition. At Domaine Hubert Lamy, the fruit is hand-harvested to ensure careful selection in the vineyard, then sorted again at the winery. Vinification typically follows a gentle, traditional Burgundian approach: partial destemming depending on the vintage, a cold maceration to draw out color and fragrance, followed by fermentation in open vats with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (with a restrained use of new oak) to preserve freshness and purity, before bottling with minimal intervention to capture the vineyard’s character.
Food & Serving
This Chassagne-Montrachet rouge is wonderfully versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with roast chicken, duck breast, rabbit, pork tenderloin, veal dishes, mushroom risotto, or simply a plate of charcuterie and semi-soft cheeses like Reblochon or Tomme. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its aromatic delicacy and freshness. A gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up its floral and spicy notes, especially in its first few years, though it will also unfold nicely in the glass over the course of a meal.
Producer
Domaine Hubert Lamy is one of the benchmarks of the Côte de Beaune, particularly renowned for its precision-driven whites from Saint-Aubin and neighboring appellations, but also increasingly admired for its refined reds. The Lamy family has been cultivating vines in Burgundy since the 17th century, with the modern estate shaped by Hubert Lamy from the 1970s onward and now driven by his son Olivier, who is known for his meticulous vineyard work and low-intervention philosophy. The domaine has played a key role in elevating the reputation of less-heralded villages and specific lieux-dits, demonstrating that careful viticulture and thoughtful winemaking can reveal great terroir in unexpected corners. Their wines are now highly sought-after by collectors and Burgundy enthusiasts around the world for their clarity, energy and terroir expression.
