Description

Domaine Henri Bonneau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins is one of the most sought-after expressions of the southern Rhône, revered for its depth, rarity, and unmistakable sense of place. Produced in magnum for added longevity, this 2016 release carries the legacy of one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most iconic and uncompromising estates.

Tasting Notes
Expect a deep, saturated color with the kind of intensity that hints at the wine’s concentration and age-worthy structure. The bouquet typically moves from ripe red and black fruit into dried herbs, spice, garrigue, leather, and earthy complexity, with the 2016 vintage offering particularly pure fruit and finely woven spice. On the palate, Réserve des Célestins is known for its layered, full-bodied style and velvety texture, balancing ripe Grenache richness with Mourvèdre-backed structure and a touch of Syrah freshness. The finish is long and nuanced, built for patient cellaring; in magnum, it should evolve gracefully for decades, gaining savory complexity and silkier tannins over time.

Production
Sourced from old vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the wine reflects the region’s classic galets roulés, warm Mediterranean climate, and diverse soils that help ripen fruit while preserving character. Domaine Henri Bonneau is known for traditional, low-intervention winemaking, with a deliberate, patient approach that emphasizes expression over polish, and the 2016 vintage benefited from a more balanced growing season than some of the more difficult years in the region.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for rich, slow-cooked dishes such as braised lamb, game, beef cheek, or herb-roasted duck, as well as aged cheeses and dishes with Provençal seasoning. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting several hours in advance to allow the aromatics and texture to open, especially when enjoyed young.

Producer
Domaine Henri Bonneau is a benchmark producer in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, admired worldwide for its deeply traditional philosophy and profound, age-worthy wines. Henri Bonneau’s small-scale production and unwavering commitment to old-vine character made the estate legendary, and his wines remain among the most collected and celebrated from the Rhône.
