Description
Domaine Henri Bonneau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins is one of the most sought-after wines from the Southern Rhône, admired for its depth, restraint, and unmistakable old-school character. Produced in tiny quantities and tied to one of the region’s most legendary names, it represents a rare and highly collectible expression of Grenache-led Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine typically shows a deep garnet color with a slightly translucent rim, reflecting its Grenache-driven core. The nose is layered and perfumed, often combining ripe red fruits, kirsch, wild herbs, dried flowers, warm spice, and the earthy, savory nuances that define great Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
On the palate, it is usually both powerful and graceful, with silky tannins, concentrated fruit, and a long, refined finish. Expect red berry and pomegranate notes alongside pepper, garrigue, and subtle mineral depth. Réserve des Célestins has excellent aging potential and can develop beautifully for many years, gaining complexity, softness, and tertiary notes with time.
Production
Sourced from old vines in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, the wine reflects the sun-drenched terroir of the Southern Rhône, where galets roulés, sandy soils, and warm Mediterranean influences help shape ripeness and intensity. The blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah is crafted in the traditional manner associated with Domaine Henri Bonneau, emphasizing low yields and careful selection.
Vinification is typically very hands-off, with a focus on native yeasts, extended élevage, and minimal intervention to preserve character and texture. The result is a wine that feels deeply rooted in place, combining generosity with remarkable finesse.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, game, duck confit, braised short ribs, or hearty mushroom-based dishes. It also works well with aged hard cheeses and Provençal cuisine featuring herbs and olive oil. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for a few hours is recommended, especially in youth, to allow the wine’s aromas and structure to fully open.
Producer
Domaine Henri Bonneau is one of the most iconic names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, long admired for its traditional approach and extraordinary consistency across great vintages. Henri Bonneau became a cult figure for his deeply personal winemaking style, and the domaine has earned an almost mythical reputation among collectors and serious Rhône enthusiasts. Its wines are celebrated for their purity, longevity, and unmistakable sense of place.
