Description
Domaine Guinand’s Big Black Gorilla 2024 is a bold, characterful southern French red that lives up to its name without losing finesse. Dark, sun-ripened, and immediately appealing, it combines generous fruit, Mediterranean spice, and a polished structure that makes it both powerful and surprisingly refined.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby color with an almost opaque core, hinting at its intensity. The nose is vivid and expressive, opening with blackcurrant, ripe plum, and blackberry jam, followed by layers of cocoa, black pepper, bay leaf, and a subtle toasted note.
The palate is full-bodied and velvety, with a broad texture and ripe tannins woven neatly through the dark fruit. Flavors of black cherry, spice, and dark chocolate carry through to a long, warm finish with a gentle smoky edge. Thanks to its freshness and balanced tannins, it should drink well now and also hold nicely over the next few years.
Production
This is a southern French blend shaped by warm sunshine and a Mediterranean climate, which help develop the wine’s ripe fruit profile and spicy, savory nuances. The grapes are typically harvested at full ripeness to capture concentration and richness, then vinified to preserve depth, smooth texture, and balance rather than sheer weight.
Food & Serving
A natural match for grilled beef, barbecue dishes, slow-cooked stews, and other hearty meals with smoky or savory flavors. Serve slightly below room temperature, ideally around 16–18°C, and consider brief decanting if serving young to help the aromas open fully.
Producer
Domaine Guinand is a family-owned producer in southern France known for making expressive, fruit-driven wines with plenty of regional character. The estate has built a strong reputation for approachable yet well-crafted wines that reflect the warmth and generosity of their Mediterranean origins, and Big Black Gorilla stands out as a memorable example of that style.
