Description
Domaine Gramenon La Vie On Y Est Côtes du Rhône blanc Bio 2021 is a vibrant, organically farmed white that captures the sun-drenched character of the southern Rhône while remaining beautifully fresh and precise. Its playful name – a wordplay on “La Viognier” and the phrase “La vie, on y est” (“Life – here we are”) – hints at both its dominant grape variety and its joyful, life-affirming style. Crafted from a blend of 60% Viognier and 40% Clairette, this cuvée stands out for its finesse, low-intervention winemaking and pure expression of terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Vie On Y Est shows a luminous pale straw to light gold hue, with subtle green highlights that underline its freshness and youth. The nose is fine and expressive rather than exuberant, opening with notes of ripe melon, pink grapefruit, mandarin zest and lychee, layered with delicate white flowers, stone fruit and a gentle hint of fresh herbs and citrus peel.
On the palate, the wine is supple and silky, with Viognier’s generous fruit framed by Clairette’s tension and salinity. Juicy citrus and exotic fruit are balanced by a clean, mineral backbone and a lightly savoury, stony edge from the vineyard’s pebble and sandstone soils. The finish is long, mouthwatering and precise, with a refined bitterness reminiscent of grapefruit pith that keeps the wine lifted and food-friendly. Enjoy this now for its vivid fruit and energy, or cellar it for 3–5 years to see more honeyed, nutty nuances emerge while maintaining its structure.
Production
The grapes for La Vie On Y Est come from organically farmed vineyards in the southern Rhône, planted on slopes at around 350 meters above sea level. Here, old pebbly soils mixed with fossil-rich shell sandstone provide excellent drainage, natural concentration and a subtle maritime-mineral imprint. The vines average around 30 years of age, with naturally moderate yields of about 40 hl/ha. All fruit is carefully hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are used. After a gentle pressing, the must is allowed to ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in used barriques, where it also ages for around six months. These old barrels are neutral, contributing texture and micro-oxygenation without adding oak flavour or tannin. The wine is bottled with minimal intervention, apart from a light addition of sulphur, preserving the purity and authenticity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Côtes du Rhône blanc is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with Mediterranean-inspired dishes and subtly aromatic cuisine. Try it with grilled sea bass or dorade with herbs, seared scallops, prawns with citrus and fennel, or roast chicken with lemon and thyme. It also works well alongside vegetable dishes such as roasted cauliflower, fennel gratin, ratatouille, or soft cheeses like fresh goat’s cheese and bloomy-rind styles. Serve at 10–12°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity; a brief 20–30 minute opening in the glass or carafe is sufficient, as extended decanting is not necessary but a short aeration will help the wine unfold its full bouquet.
Producer
Domaine Gramenon is one of the most respected names in the southern Rhône, widely regarded as a pioneer of organic and low-intervention winemaking in the region. Founded in the late 1970s and driven for decades by the vision of Michèle Aubéry-Laurent (now joined by her son Maxime-François Laurent), the estate is based in the cooler, higher-altitude sectors of the Drôme Provençale. Working with old vines, living soils and minimal inputs, Gramenon has built a reputation for wines that are both soulful and precise, expressing the character of their terroirs with clarity rather than extraction or oak. While they are best known for their pure, vibrant Grenache, their whites – like La Vie On Y Est – showcase the same commitment to authenticity, balance and drinkability that has made the domaine a reference point for serious Rhône enthusiasts around the world.
