Description
Domaine Duchemin’s Maranges 1er Cru Le Clos des Rois 2022 is a beautifully poised Pinot Noir from the southern edge of the Côte de Beaune, offering classic Burgundy finesse with a notably more approachable price point than many of its famous neighbors. Drawn from old vines in the Clos des Rois parcel, it combines depth, elegance, and a real sense of place—an insider’s choice from one of Burgundy’s still-underrated appellations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a clear ruby-red colour. The nose is lifted and expressive, with fresh cherry, raspberry, cranberry, forest floor, and a touch of spice.
The palate has impressive presence and depth, with red fruit at the core, supported by fine tannins and a subtle smoky note on the long finish. It already offers plenty of charm, but should continue to gain nuance over the next several years.
Production
Maranges sits at the southernmost end of the Côte de Beaune, where limestone-rich slopes and a cooler Burgundy climate help Pinot Noir retain freshness and balance. The Clos des Rois parcel on Domaine Duchemin’s holdings features vines up to 65 years old, bringing concentration and complexity to the wine. Winemaker Benjamin Duchemin works with destemming, no added yeast, fermentation in large wooden vats for around two weeks, and then ages the wine for 14 months in French oak barrels.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast poultry, duck, game birds, mushroom dishes, or veal with a light cream sauce. Serve at around 15–17°C, and decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended if you want to open up the wine’s aromatic detail and texture.
Producer
Domaine Duchemin is a Burgundy producer with a style rooted in precision, restraint, and respect for terroir. While Maranges remains one of the region’s quieter appellations, the domaine helps show just how compelling it can be, especially when old vines and thoughtful élevage are involved. Benjamin Duchemin’s careful, low-intervention approach has helped craft wines that overdeliver on both character and value.
