Description
Domaine du Pégau Cuvée Réservée 2016 in Imperial (6 L) is a commanding expression of classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape, presented in a spectacular large format built for long aging and unforgettable gatherings. Hailing from one of the most revered traditional estates in the Southern Rhône, this wine captures the depth and richness of the benchmark 2016 vintage. Powerfully fruited yet remarkably refined, it embodies everything collectors and Rhône enthusiasts seek in top-tier Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Cuvée Réservée shows a deep, dark ruby color with garnet hues forming at the rim, hinting at both concentration and evolution. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe black cherries and blackberries mingle with black licorice, dark chocolate shavings, and a savory core of Provençal garrigue—thyme, rosemary, and dried herbs—along with subtle notes of smoked meat, leather, and cracked black pepper.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, rich, and velvety, with an opulent texture that remains beautifully balanced by fresh acidity and fine, ripe tannins. Flavors of black cherry compote, plum, and blackberry are intertwined with licorice, cocoa, and a touch of espresso, leading into a long, spicy, and slightly saline finish. The Imperial format significantly extends the wine’s aging curve; while already approachable with proper aeration, it has the structure to evolve gracefully for 20 years or more from the vintage, developing further complexity and tertiary notes of truffle, leather, and dried flowers.
Production
Domaine du Pégau farms old-vine parcels across some of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s finest terroirs, rooted in a mix of galets roulés (large rounded stones), clay-limestone soils, and sandy plots that together lend both power and finesse. The blend for Cuvée Réservée is Grenache-led (often around 80%), supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre, and small amounts of other permitted local varieties, all harvested by hand at optimal ripeness. True to the estate’s traditional philosophy, the grapes are typically fermented with whole clusters using indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks, followed by long aging in large, old oak foudres that impart texture without overt wood flavor. Minimal intervention and no fining, with only light filtration if needed, preserve the wine’s authenticity and structure—especially important in a long-aging 6 L Imperial.
Food & Serving
This 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée in Imperial is a superb match for rich, savory dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, slow-braised beef daube, game birds, duck confit, or venison with root vegetables. It also shines alongside truffled dishes, hearty stews, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F); given the wine’s youth in large format and its concentration, decanting for 2–3 hours (or even longer for maximum expression) is recommended to open up its aromatics and soften the tannins. This format is ideal for special occasions and shared meals where the wine can be followed over an entire evening.
Producer
Domaine du Pégau is one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s reference-point estates, known for its unwavering commitment to traditional winemaking and expressive, age-worthy reds. Run by the Féraud family, with Laurence Féraud at the helm in the modern era, the domaine has built a reputation for crafting powerful yet nuanced wines that capture the distinct character of the region’s old vines and varied terroirs. Cuvée Réservée is their flagship bottling and a benchmark for classic Southern Rhône style, frequently earning high critical acclaim and coveted status among collectors. In a great vintage like 2016, especially in an Imperial format, it represents both a piece of Rhône history and a wine destined for long-term cellaring.
