Description
Domaine du Pegau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée is one of the appellation’s most sought-after classics, prized for its depth, authenticity, and exceptional value in a grand terroir. Crafted from a traditional blend of 13 grape varieties, with Grenache taking the lead, it reflects the old-school style that has made Pegau a benchmark name in the Southern Rhône.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2016 Magnum shows a deep, concentrated ruby-garnet color. The nose opens with ripe blackberry, dark plum, black tea, black pepper, and fresh Mediterranean herbs, with additional layers of leather and sandalwood emerging as it breathes. On the palate, it is powerful yet refined, delivering dense dark fruit, clove, white pepper, rosemary, and thyme, balanced by impressive structure and freshness.
This is a wine built for the cellar: approachable with aeration now, but capable of improving for at least another 5 years and holding at a very high level for around 20 years or more. The magnum format adds even more aging potential and graceful evolution.
Production
The Réservée is made from a traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape field blend, dominated by around 80% Grenache and complemented by Mourvèdre, Syrah, and the other permitted varieties of the appellation. Laurence Féraud follows a hands-on, minimal-intervention approach: whole clusters are pressed and fermentation takes place in cement tanks without added yeast. The wine is then matured for two years in used oak barrels, allowing the purity of fruit and the character of the terroir to remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
Best enjoyed with rich, savory dishes such as slow-roasted lamb, game, beef stew, duck confit, or herb-crusted lamb chops. It also pairs beautifully with hard cheeses and Provençal cuisine. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas to fully open.
Producer
Domaine du Pegau is a family-run estate led by Laurence Féraud, and it has become one of the defining producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The domaine is known for its traditional winemaking, old-vine fruit, and deeply expressive wines that capture the spirit of the Southern Rhône. Its flagship cuvées have earned a loyal following among collectors and Rhône lovers worldwide.
