Description

Domaine du Pégau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 2012 is one of the region’s benchmark reds, celebrated for its depth, complexity, and remarkable value for a wine of this pedigree. Dominated by Grenache and built from a traditional blend of 13 grape varieties, it reflects the old-school character and longevity that have made Pégau a cult favorite among Rhône enthusiasts.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2012 vintage shows a deep, dark ruby core with the kind of concentration you’d expect from a serious Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The nose opens with blackberry, dark plum, black tea, black pepper, and fragrant herbal notes of rosemary and thyme, with time revealing leather and sandalwood. The palate is powerful yet finely balanced, delivering layers of dark fruit, clove, white pepper, and savory Mediterranean herbs. It has impressive structure and the stuffing to age beautifully, improving over the next 5 years and comfortably holding at a high level for 20–25 years.

Production
Cuvée Réservée is made from a traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape field-style blend of 13 grape varieties, though it is clearly led by around 80% Grenache. The grapes are whole-cluster pressed and fermented in cement vats with native yeasts, then the wine is matured for two years in used oak barrels, a method that preserves purity while adding nuance and texture.

Food & Serving
This is a natural match for rich, flavor-packed dishes such as lamb shoulder, beef daube, roast game, duck, or slow-cooked stews with Provençal herbs. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young, as it will help the wine open up and show its full aromatic range.

Producer
Domaine du Pégau, led by Laurence Féraud, is one of the most respected names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a reference point for traditional Rhône winemaking. The estate has earned a devoted following for its powerful, age-worthy wines, particularly the Cuvée Réservée and the flagship Da Capo, both of which have helped cement Pégau’s reputation as a producer of world-class Southern Rhône reds.
