Description

Domaine du Pégau Cuvée Laurence 2012 Magnum is a distinctive Châteauneuf-du-Pape that pays tribute to the older, slower way of making wine in the Rhône. Built on a Grenache-led blend and aged for four years in large casks, it offers the depth, patience and complexity that have made Pégau one of the region’s most respected names.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, concentrated ruby-garnet colour, hinting at its richness and maturity. The nose is layered and expressive, with dark plums, red cherries, leather, apricot and cocoa, gradually unfolding into more savoury tones with air. The palate is generous and textured, combining dark fruit with notes of warm chestnuts, bay leaf, tobacco and thyme. Grenache’s natural warmth and breadth are beautifully balanced by the extended ageing, and the magnum format should support even greater evolution over time. This is a wine with impressive ageing potential, and it is likely to gain further nuance and complexity with additional cellaring.

Production
Cuvée Laurence is based mainly on Grenache, with Syrah and Mourvèdre, plus the same array of other traditional grape varieties used in Réservée. The grapes are pressed and fermented using the same methods as Domaine du Pégau’s flagship wine, but the key difference lies in the élevage: this cuvée matures for a full four years in large wooden casks, echoing the traditional cellar practice once common in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and reminiscent of old-school Barolo production.

Food & Serving
This is a natural match for slow-cooked lamb, game, beef with herbs, roasted duck or richly flavoured mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least an hour, especially if opened young, to allow the wine to fully reveal its aromatic layers and polished structure.

Producer
Domaine du Pégau is a benchmark estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, closely associated with the Féraud family and particularly with winemaker Laurence Féraud. The domaine is known for championing traditional Rhône winemaking and for producing wines with remarkable character, longevity and authenticity. Its reputation has made it one of the most admired producers in the appellation.
