Description
Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Au Closeau 2022 is a refined expression of Gevrey’s more sensual side, balancing power with transparency and perfume. Sourced from a deeply soiled premier cru parcel opposite Les Corbeaux, this cuvée shows both the richness of the 2022 vintage and the classic structure of northern Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir. It stands out for its smoky, floral complexity and the effortless way it marries concentration with freshness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Au Closeau presents a vibrant, medium ruby hue with youthful brightness at the rim. The nose opens with aromas of smoked red and black berries, ripe plum and wild cherry, layered with incense, rose petals and a touch of warm earth and spice. Subtle notes of graphite and fine oak sit in the background, giving an impression of depth rather than overt wood.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and supple, combining juicy, ripe fruit with a line of lively acidity that keeps everything lifted. Flavours of raspberry, black cherry and damson are wrapped in hints of smoked tea, dried flowers and a faint savoury, meaty nuance. The tannins are finely grained and “powdery” in texture, giving grip without harshness, and the finish is long, precise and scented. Enjoyable in its youth for its fruit and perfume, it has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage, gaining more tertiary, gamey and truffley complexity with time in bottle.
Production
Au Closeau is a premier cru climat in Gevrey-Chambertin, situated just opposite Les Corbeaux on relatively deep, clay-limestone soils that naturally give wines with both body and aromatic generosity. Domaine Drouhin-Laroze farms this parcel with careful attention to vineyard health, favouring low yields and meticulous green work to ensure optimal ripeness and concentration. Grapes are harvested by hand at perfect maturity, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification typically involves a gentle, temperature-controlled fermentation of Pinot Noir in vat, with a judicious use of whole bunches depending on the vintage, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a portion new) to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit or the expression of terroir.
Food & Serving
This Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru is an excellent partner for refined dishes such as roast duck with cherries, crispy-skinned chicken, veal chop, or pork tenderloin with herbs and jus. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, game birds, or mature, semi-soft cheeses like Époisses and Delice de Bourgogne. Serve at 15–16°C to showcase its aromatic detail and fresh acidity. Younger bottles will benefit from 45–60 minutes in a decanter to open the nose and soften the tannins, while more mature examples can simply be opened and gently poured to preserve their delicate bouquet.
