Description
Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Clos Vougeot 2021 is a classic expression of one of Burgundy’s most storied Grand Cru vineyards. Crafted from 100% Pinot Noir, this red Burgundy balances finesse and depth, offering a vivid, nuanced snapshot of the 2021 vintage. For collectors and Burgundy lovers, it’s a bottle that combines immediate charm with the promise of graceful evolution.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Clos Vougeot shows a bright, translucent ruby hue, typical of finely crafted Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits. The bouquet is lively and expressive, with lifted aromas of red cherries and crushed strawberries, interwoven with notes of graphite, delicate baking spice (pain d’épices), and a subtle floral edge.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with fine, well-integrated tannins and a precise, energetic core of red berry fruit. There is a refreshing liveliness, supported by vibrant acidity, that carries flavors of ripe red cherry, wild strawberry, and a hint of white pepper into a long, structured finish. While already very appealing in its youth, the balance of fruit, tannin, and acidity suggests very good aging potential over the next 10–15 years, gaining complexity and silkier texture with time in bottle.
Production
Clos Vougeot is one of Burgundy’s most iconic Grand Crus, a walled vineyard (clos) in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, with shallow, well-drained limestone and clay soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. Domaine Drouhin-Laroze farms its parcels using meticulous, quality-focused viticulture, with careful green harvesting and selective hand-picking to ensure only perfectly ripe Pinot Noir grapes reach the winery. Vinification typically involves traditional Burgundian methods: destemming according to vintage conditions, a cold maceration to gently extract color and aroma, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled vats and élevage in French oak barrels (a portion new) to refine tannins and add subtle spice without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as roast duck with cherries, lamb loin, veal chops, or game birds like pheasant or quail. It also shines alongside dishes featuring earthy elements—wild mushrooms, truffles, or root vegetables—as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to open the bouquet and soften the structure, while older vintages should be handled gently and decanted briefly, mainly to remove sediment.
