Description
Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Chambertin Clos de Bèze 2021 is a Grand Cru Burgundy that captures the finesse and quiet power of one of the Côte de Nuits’ most revered vineyards. Crafted in a vintage known for its freshness and purity, this wine balances dark-fruited depth with remarkable precision and mineral drive. It’s a bottle for serious Burgundy lovers, offering both immediate charm and real aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Clos de Bèze shows a deep, shimmering ruby hue, hinting at concentration yet retaining the brightness typical of the vintage. The nose opens gently with dark berry fruit—think black cherry and wild blackberry—layered with laurel leaf, Earl Grey tea, and an evocative sous-bois character that speaks clearly of great Pinot Noir on limestone. Subtle notes of spice and finely integrated oak sit in the background rather than taking center stage.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with refined, silky tannins that frame the fruit rather than dominate it. Flavors of ripe red and black berries, tea leaf, and delicate floral tones are carried by a vivid line of acidity and impressive mineral tension, especially noticeable on the long, focused finish. The structure and balance suggest excellent aging potential: while it is already beautifully composed, it will reward 8–20 years in the cellar, gaining complexity, aromatic nuance, and savory depth over time.
Production
Chambertin Clos de Bèze is one of Burgundy’s most illustrious Grand Cru sites, set on well-drained limestone and marl soils in Gevrey-Chambertin, giving wines of both power and refinement. Domaine Drouhin-Laroze farms Pinot Noir vines here with an emphasis on expressing the terroir’s elegance and minerality, carefully selecting bunches at harvest for optimal ripeness and health. In 2021, the wine was fermented with around 20% whole clusters, adding aromatic lift and fine-grained structure, and then matured in French oak barrels, 80% of which were new. This élevage brings texture, polish, and subtle spice while allowing the vineyard’s character—its clarity, earthiness, and stony backbone—to remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru is at its best alongside refined dishes that echo its depth and finesse: roast duck with cherries, pigeon, veal sweetbreads, game birds, or a simply roasted rack of lamb with herbs will all harmonize beautifully. It also shines with earthy accents such as wild mushrooms, truffle-infused dishes, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or Beaufort. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth can help the wine unfurl, while mature bottles should be handled gently and may need only a brief, careful decant to remove sediment.
Producer
Domaine Drouhin-Laroze is a historic, family-run estate based in Gevrey-Chambertin, with roots dating back to the mid-19th century and a long-standing reputation for producing benchmark Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir. Over generations, the family has assembled an enviable collection of prime vineyards, including holdings in some of Burgundy’s most prestigious Grands Crus such as Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, and Bonnes-Mares. Today, the domaine is recognized for its meticulous vineyard work, sensitive use of whole clusters, and judicious oak élevage, all aimed at capturing the purity and identity of each terroir. Their Chambertin Clos de Bèze is widely regarded as one of the estate’s flagship wines, reflecting both the grandeur of the site and the precision of the domaine’s winemaking.
