Domaine d'Orfeuilles Silex d'Orfeuilles 2022

Silex d'Orfeuilles is a characterful Chenin Blanc from Vouvray that stands out for its unmistakable flinty edge and quietly luxurious depth. Made from grapes grown on exceptionally silex-rich soils and crafted under biodynamic principles, it offers a vivid expression of Loire terroir with both precision and personality.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, polished appearance with a pale golden hue. The nose is layered and inviting, with nectarine, quince, blossom, wood spice, vanilla, and a distinct smoky-flinty note that gives the wine its identity. On the palate, it is generous and full-bodied without feeling heavy, balancing ripe orchard fruit with freshness, texture, and a subtle mineral line. It is enjoyable now for its expressive fruit and detail, but it also has serious aging potential; in the right cellar conditions, it can evolve beautifully for many years, even decades.

Production
The Chenin Blanc grapes come from a flint-rich site in Vouvray, where the Loire climate and soil composition are especially well suited to the variety. The fruit is harvested and sorted by hand, then gently pressed for 2 to 3 hours before fermentation in oak barrels with only native yeasts. The wine matures for 11 months, partly in stainless steel and partly in oak, with around 25% new barrels to add subtle structure and complexity.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast poultry, creamy fish dishes, shellfish, mushroom-based plates, and aged goat cheese, where its texture and mineral tension can shine. Serve it chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and consider brief decanting if drinking young to help open its aromatic layers.

Domaine d'Orfeuilles was founded in 1947 by Paul Herivault on the remains of a former medieval castle, and today it is run by his son Bernard Herivault. The domaine is known in Vouvray for its uncompromising biodynamic approach and for producing wines with real individuality, whether dry, off-dry, sweet, or sparkling. Its wines have earned a strong reputation for purity, craftsmanship, and long-lived quality in a region that still deserves far more attention than it often receives.
