Description

Domaine des Forges Coteaux du Layon 1er Cru Chaume 2018 is a sumptuous Loire Valley dessert wine crafted entirely from late‑harvest Chenin Blanc. Drawn from the prized Chaume enclave, this cuvée captures the region’s hallmark balance of luscious sweetness and vibrant acidity. With its low yields and meticulous selection of overripe grapes, it offers a concentrated, refined expression of one of the Loire’s most celebrated sweet wine terroirs. The unique selling point of this wine lies in its origin: Chaume AOC is a tiny, 78-hectare premier cru site within Coteaux du Layon, officially recognized in 2007 and strictly limited to just 25 hL/ha. Steep slopes of sandstone-schist, quartz and puddingstone over a carbon-rich subsoil foster exceptional ripeness and aromatic complexity, making Chaume one of the Loire’s most distinctive sweet wine crus. Domaine des Forges, a historic family estate now in its fifth generation, has been instrumental in showcasing the prestige of Coteaux du Layon, Quarts de Chaume and neighboring appellations across the Loire Valley.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Coteaux du Layon 1er Cru Chaume shines a deep golden hue, with youthful lemon-gold highlights that will slowly deepen into amber tones as it ages. The nose is intense and seductive, layered with ripe apricot, dried yellow peach, candied citrus peel and acacia honey, underpinned by notes of quince paste, chamomile, and a subtle mineral smokiness from the schist-rich soils. On the palate, this dessert wine is rich and velvety yet beautifully poised, with a core of honeyed stone fruit, baked apple, and orange marmalade lifted by Chenin Blanc’s vibrant acidity. Hints of dried pineapple, ginger and spice emerge with air, while a saline, mineral edge keeps the sweetness from ever feeling heavy. The finish is long, pure and gently mouthcoating, suggesting excellent capacity to evolve. Properly cellared, this 2018 has strong aging potential and should develop even greater complexity over 10–20 years, gaining notes of caramelized fruit, beeswax and subtle nuttiness with time.

Production
The grapes for this wine come from steep, well-exposed slopes in the tiny Chaume AOC, where sandstone-schist, quartz and puddingstone rest on a carbonaceous subsoil. This distinctive terroir, combined with the proximity of the Loire and Layon rivers, encourages slow ripening and the concentration of sugars and aromas in the Chenin Blanc berries. Harvesting is carried out in multiple passes (tries), with pickers returning to the vineyard to select only the most overripe, perfectly concentrated grapes from small sections of each bunch. In the cellar, the fruit is gently pressed using a pneumatic (bladder) press to preserve delicacy and purity. Alcoholic fermentation is carefully temperature-controlled to retain freshness and aromatic intensity, after which the wine is matured in a combination of tanks and barrels, allowing both terroir character and fruit richness to shine without excessive oak influence.

Food & Serving
This Coteaux du Layon 1er Cru Chaume is an ideal partner for fruit‑based desserts such as tarte Tatin, apricot tart, poached pears or citrus cakes, as well as blue cheeses like Roquefort or Fourme d’Ambert, where its sweetness and acidity balance the salt and intensity. It also pairs beautifully with foie gras terrine, spicy Asian dishes with a touch of sweetness, or simply a plate of aged hard cheeses and nuts to end a meal elegantly. Serve lightly chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving, or gently swirling in the glass, will help the wine reveal its full range of aromas.
