Description
Domaine de la Vougeraie Musigny Grand Cru 2021 is a rare and finely etched expression of one of Burgundy’s most revered vineyards. Crafted from meticulously selected Pinot Noir and vinified with 100% whole clusters, it delivers a poised balance of red fruit purity, spice and structure. While 2021 is a cooler, more classical vintage rather than a powerhouse year, this Musigny offers a beautifully transparent view into its legendary terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Musigny shows a luminous, medium ruby color—elegant rather than dense, reflecting the vintage’s finesse. The nose unfolds gradually with red berries—wild strawberry, red cherry and redcurrant—layered over subtle notes of undergrowth, dried leaves and a gentle touch of tobacco leaf. Hints of rose petal, spice and a whisper of earth add complexity as the wine opens.
On the palate, this is medium-bodied with a refined, elongated structure and slightly firm, gently drying tannins that speak of its youth. The whole-cluster fermentation brings a lifted, aromatic spice—white pepper, clove and a touch of savory stem character—that builds across the mid-palate. Red berries remain at the core, joined by a mineral edge and a cool, almost saline finish. While not a blockbuster Musigny, it is graceful, detailed and quietly persistent. It should evolve well over the next 10–15 years, gaining silkiness and aromatic nuance with proper cellaring.
Production
Musigny Grand Cru sits on the limestone-rich slopes above the village of Chambolle-Musigny, a site famed for producing some of the most perfumed and refined Pinot Noir in Burgundy. Domaine de la Vougeraie works organically and biodynamically, favoring low yields and careful, often hand-based vineyard work to preserve fruit purity and terroir expression. The grapes for this 2021 were harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and vinified with 100% whole clusters, bringing added complexity and tension. Fermentation took place with indigenous yeasts, followed by élevage in French oak (a portion new), allowing the wine to gain texture and depth while keeping the delicate fragrance of Musigny at the forefront.
Food & Serving
This Musigny Grand Cru is best matched with refined, subtly flavored dishes that allow its elegance to shine: roasted pigeon or duck, veal tenderloin with morels, or simple preparations of lamb with herbs. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring earthy elements, such as truffle risotto or wild mushroom fricassée. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decant gently for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and let the spice and floral notes unfurl; with additional bottle age, a shorter decant or careful splash in a wide glass will be sufficient.
Producer
Domaine de la Vougeraie is a relatively young but highly respected Burgundy estate, founded in 1999 when the Boisset family brought together an exceptional collection of vineyard holdings under one quality-driven domaine. From the outset, the estate has championed organic and biodynamic viticulture, emphasizing precision and respect for terroir across some of the Côte d’Or’s most illustrious climats, including Musigny, Bonnes-Mares and Clos de Vougeot. In a short time, Domaine de la Vougeraie has become a reference for pure, finely crafted Burgundies, consistently earning strong critical acclaim and a loyal following among collectors worldwide.
