Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Bel Air shows a luminous, medium ruby hue, characteristic of finely extracted Pinot Noir from a cool, elevated site. The nose is strikingly floral, with rose petals and violets taking center stage, supported by notes of crushed raspberries, wild blackberry, subtle spice, and a hint of chalky minerality. On the palate, this is medium-bodied yet concentrated, with a core of blackberry and red raspberry fruit framed by fine, chalk-dusted tannins. The whole-cluster fermentation adds lift and complexity, giving a gentle stemmy spice and freshness that carries through to the long, lightly saline finish. Still youthful, the structure and acidity suggest that it will benefit from cellaring; it should start to really hit its stride after 3–5 years in bottle and evolve gracefully for a decade or more under good storage conditions.

Production
Bel Air is a high-lying Premier Cru vineyard perched above the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, where thin, limestone-rich soils over hard rock give naturally low yields and a pronounced mineral line in the wines. Domaine de la Vougeraie farms its parcels organically and biodynamically, harvesting by hand to ensure healthy, perfectly ripe Pinot Noir berries. In 2020, around 50% whole clusters were used in the ferment, bringing aromatic lift and tannic finesse. After a gentle, temperature-controlled vinification with careful extraction, the wine was aged in French oak barrels (with a restrained proportion of new oak) to preserve purity, finesse, and the vineyard’s distinctive elegance.
