Description
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is one of Burgundy’s most revered estates, and this 2002 Vosne-Romanée shows exactly why the domaine is often regarded as the benchmark for Pinot Noir. Sourced from one of the region’s most prestigious villages, it combines rare finesse, depth, and unmistakable pedigree in a style that speaks clearly of its exceptional terroir and the house’s centuries-old legacy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine typically shows a refined ruby-garnet color with remarkable clarity and elegance. The bouquet is classic Vosne-Romanée: black cherry, red berry fruit, warm spice, pepper, and subtle earthy notes, wrapped in the signature satin-like perfume that makes the domaine so admired.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied yet intensely layered, with supple tannins, fresh acidity, and a beautifully balanced core of ripe cherry, spice, and fine mineral detail. The 2002 vintage is known for its composure and precision, and this wine should still have excellent cellaring potential, evolving gracefully toward greater complexity over time.
Production
The vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti are among the finest in Burgundy, with prized holdings in Vosne-Romanée and other Grand Cru sites. The domaine farms with meticulous attention to detail, using organic principles and some biodynamic practices, ultra-low yields, and hand harvesting with strict sorting to ensure only the best fruit reaches the cellar. Vinification follows a traditional, minimally interventionist approach, with fermentation in large wooden vats and ageing in new French oak to preserve purity, structure, and site expression.
Food & Serving
This is a wine best served with dishes that honor its elegance and depth, such as roast pigeon, duck breast, veal, lamb, game birds, or mushroom-based dishes. It also pairs beautifully with truffled risotto and fine aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting young bottles briefly to allow the aromatics to unfold, while older examples may only need gentle aeration.
Producer
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, based in Vosne-Romanée, is one of the most legendary producers in the world and the undisputed icon of Burgundy. Its history stretches back to the 13th century, and over time the domaine has assembled an extraordinary portfolio of Grand Cru vineyards, including Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, and Échezeaux. Under the leadership of Aubert de Villaine and with a remarkably consistent cellar team, the estate has become synonymous with precision, purity, and excellence, earning a place at the very pinnacle of fine wine.
