Description
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s La Tâche is one of Burgundy’s most iconic Pinot Noirs, sourced from a legendary Grand Cru monopole in Vosne-Romanée. The 2005 vintage is especially celebrated for its depth, precision, and rare combination of power and finesse, making it a benchmark wine for collectors. With roots in a site first recorded in the 13th century, La Tâche carries both historic prestige and extraordinary modern-day allure.
Tasting Notes
The wine is typically deep ruby in the glass, with remarkable luminosity and intensity. On the nose, it opens with layers of game, musk, iris, star anise, vanilla, allspice, and a concentrated core of ripe dark cherry and berry fruit, unfolding with striking complexity.
On the palate, the 2005 La Tâche is vivid and incisive, showing sweet, densely packed fruit wrapped in exotic spice, floral lift, and a strong mineral line. Despite its abundant tannins, the texture is famously seamless and velvety, with a long, penetrating finish. While already profound, it has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over many decades.
Production
La Tâche comes from one of Burgundy’s greatest terroirs, located in Vosne-Romanée on a Grand Cru site owned exclusively by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The vineyard is farmed organically, with biodynamic principles also influencing the work in the vines, and yields are kept extremely low through meticulous canopy management, strict pruning, and massal selection from historic old Pinot Noir material. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, followed by rigorous sorting in the winery to ensure only the healthiest grapes are vinified.
Vinification follows a traditional, minimally interventionist approach: no cold soak, natural fermentation, and gentle handling to preserve the purity of the site. The wine is aged for around 16 to 18 months in oak, with a high proportion of new barrels, allowing the wine to gain polish without losing its essential Burgundy character.
Food & Serving
This is a wine best served with refined, flavorful dishes such as roast game bird, duck breast, veal tenderloin, truffled mushroom dishes, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant carefully if the bottle is young or just opened, though older bottles may be better opened with minimal aeration to preserve their delicate aromatics. Given its concentration and structure, La Tâche also benefits from time in the glass.
Producer
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is widely regarded as the crown jewel of Burgundy, with a history dating back to the monastic vineyards of Saint-Vivant in the 13th century. Based in Vosne-Romanée, the domaine owns only Grand Cru vineyards, including its namesake Romanée-Conti and the famed La Tâche monopole, and has long been synonymous with the highest expression of Pinot Noir. Under the stewardship of Aubert de Villaine and with a deeply respected team in the vineyards and cellar, the estate has built a global reputation for meticulous farming, low yields, and wines of exceptional purity and longevity.
