Description

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s Grands Échezeaux is one of Burgundy’s most coveted Grand Cru expressions, combining depth, precision, and the unmistakable finesse of world-class Pinot Noir. From one of the most iconic domaines in the region, it reflects both extraordinary vineyard pedigree and a winemaking philosophy built on restraint, purity, and patience. The 2015 vintage stands out for its concentration and structure, promising immense rewards for those willing to cellar it.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Grands Échezeaux is typically deep and translucent ruby, with the kind of polished clarity that signals serious Pinot Noir. The bouquet is layered and brooding, unfolding with raspberry, plum preserve, currant leaf, blood orange, and a growing sense of forest floor, framed by refined new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and tightly wound, with impressive depth, muscular concentration, and a firm tannic spine that gives it real authority. It is not a wine that gives everything up immediately; instead, it evolves slowly, revealing more complexity with time in bottle. With its raw material and structure, it has outstanding aging potential and should develop beautifully over many years.

Production
Sourced from the Grand Cru slopes of Grands Échezeaux in Vosne-Romanée, the wine comes from one of Burgundy’s most revered terroirs, where old vines, low yields, and meticulous vineyard work are central to the style. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti farms organically and draws on biodynamic principles, with a strong emphasis on massal selection, severe pruning, and extremely selective harvesting by hand. At the winery, the fruit is sorted again before vinification, with no cold soaking and a naturally initiated fermentation. The wine is fermented in traditional wooden vats, then transferred to entirely new oak barrels after around three weeks. It is matured for approximately 16 to 18 months before bottling, with minimal intervention to preserve the clarity of the terroir.

Food & Serving
This is a wine best paired with refined dishes that can match its depth and structure, such as roast duck, squab, truffled mushroom risotto, lamb loin, or game birds with earthy sauces. It also works beautifully with dishes featuring porcini, morels, or gentle spice. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for a few hours if the wine is young, as it can benefit from air to gradually open its aromas and soften the tannins.

Producer
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is widely regarded as the benchmark producer in Burgundy, with a history tracing back to the monks of Saint-Vivant in the 13th century. Based in Vosne-Romanée, the domaine owns only Grand Cru vineyards, including some of the region’s most legendary sites such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, and Grands Échezeaux. Under the stewardship of Aubert de Villaine, the estate has become synonymous with precision, elegance, and almost unmatched quality, while its organic farming and traditional cellar work have helped secure its reputation as one of the greatest wine producers in the world.
