Description

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is one of Burgundy’s most legendary names, and this 2012 assortment brings together some of its most sought-after Pinot Noir expressions in a presentation worthy of the domaine’s reputation. Drawn from iconic vineyards including Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands Échezeaux and Échezeaux, it offers a rare opportunity to experience the breadth and brilliance of this historic estate. With roots stretching back more than eight centuries, the domaine remains a benchmark for fine wine worldwide.

Tasting Notes
The wines in this assortment typically show a remarkably pure and transparent Burgundian profile, with each vineyard contributing its own nuance. Romanée-Conti is the most harmonious and complete, combining richness, depth and finesse; La Tâche is concentrated and silky with impressive fruit intensity; Richebourg is powerful and built for long ageing; Romanée-Saint-Vivant tends toward a more delicate, supple elegance; while the two Échézeaux wines are known for their ripe fruit and fuller, more forceful expression. Across the range, expect lifted aromas of red cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, rose petal, spice, earth and subtle oak. On the palate, the wines are layered, precise and refined, with fine tannins and exceptional length. The 2012 vintage has the structure to evolve beautifully over many years, and the top cuvées will continue to gain complexity with extended cellar ageing.

Production
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti farms its vineyards with a strong focus on organic and biodynamic principles, aiming to preserve balance in the soil and encourage naturally resilient vines. Yields are kept exceptionally low through strict pruning, meticulous vine selection and a rigorous pre-harvest pass to remove any substandard bunches. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand, usually later than many neighbouring producers, followed by an additional manual sorting to ensure only the finest fruit is vinified. Ageing takes place in new French oak barrels from François Frères, typically for 16 to 18 months before bottling.

Food & Serving
These wines are best served with refined dishes that match their depth and elegance, such as roasted duck, quail, pigeon, truffle risotto, game birds, wild mushroom dishes or lamb with delicate herbs. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting younger bottles for about 30–60 minutes to allow the aromatics to unfold. Older or more delicate bottles should be decanted carefully, or simply opened ahead of service if you want to preserve their fragrance.

Producer
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, often abbreviated as DRC, is among the most celebrated producers in Burgundy and is widely regarded as a reference point for Pinot Noir. The estate’s history dates back more than eight centuries, with ownership passing through several influential hands before M. Duvault-Blochet established the modern domaine in 1869. Today, under the leadership of Aubert de Villaine and his family, it owns or holds shares in many of Burgundy’s greatest vineyards, and its reputation for precision, restraint and exceptional quality has made it one of the most admired names in fine wine.
