Description
Domaine de la Pousse d'Or’s Volnay En Caillerets 2023 captures the refined, graceful character of one of Volnay’s most distinguished Premier Cru vineyards. Crafted from Pinot Noir and shaped by biodynamic farming, it combines fragrant red fruit, floral finesse and chalky mineral precision with the pedigree to develop beautifully in bottle.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby in colour, this Premier Cru opens with an elegant bouquet of red cherries, raspberries and violets, followed by subtle floral nuances, delicate spice and a distinct mineral freshness. On the palate, it is precise and beautifully balanced, with silky tannins, lively acidity and a layered expression of ripe red fruit complemented by a fine, chalky tension. The finish is long, poised and quietly complex.
Charming and accessible in its youth, the wine should gain further depth, savoury complexity and textural harmony with age. It can be enjoyed from around 2027, while careful cellaring should reward it for 10–15 years or more, depending on storage conditions.
Production
The En Caillerets vineyard benefits from the limestone-rich soils and favourable exposures that help give Volnay its celebrated combination of delicacy and precision. The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously sorted before a slow, carefully controlled fermentation designed to preserve the character of the site. The wine is then matured for an extended period on its fine lees in oak barrels, allowing it to develop texture and complexity while keeping the oak discreet and the elegance of the Pinot Noir at the forefront. Domaine de la Pousse d'Or farms biodynamically, with the aim of expressing each terroir as clearly as possible.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 15–17°C, giving the wine time to open in the glass. It is an excellent match for refined dishes such as roast veal, guinea fowl, duck, quail or poultry with mushrooms. More delicate preparations of sweetbread, truffle and wild mushrooms also complement its silky tannins, mineral character and floral fragrance. Decanting is not essential when the wine is young, but a gentle 30–60 minutes in a decanter can help reveal its aromatic depth; older bottles are best decanted carefully off any sediment.
Producer
Domaine de la Pousse d'Or is regarded as one of the leading estates of the Côte de Beaune. Based in Volnay, the domaine farms approximately 17 hectares across a remarkable collection of vineyards, including holdings in seven Grand Cru and eleven Premier Cru sites in appellations such as Volnay, Chambolle-Musigny, Pommard, Corton and Puligny-Montrachet. Its biodynamic approach, meticulous hand harvesting and patient élevage have helped establish a reputation for wines of purity, finesse and compelling terroir expression.
