Description
Bottled in an impressive magnum format, Domaine de la Mordorée’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Reine des Bois 2020 is a powerful yet seductive expression of the Southern Rhône. This cuvée is the estate’s flagship red, blending 80% Grenache with 10% Mourvèdre and small portions of Syrah and Vaccarèse to showcase both the richness and finesse of the vintage. Awarded 96 points by Jeb Dunnuck, it combines immediate charm with serious structure, making it ideal for both collectors and enthusiasts looking for a standout Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 La Reine des Bois shows a deep ruby to purple hue, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is layered and expressive, with ripe blackberry, black raspberry and cherry compote mingling with notes of crushed violets, garrigue herbs, cracked black pepper and a subtle touch of new saddle leather and warm stones.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a supple, enveloping texture and impressive depth. Dark berries, kirsch and plum are supported by nuances of licorice, spice and dried thyme, leading into a long, finely etched finish. The tannins are refined but building, giving the wine both structure and energy. While already harmonious and inviting now, especially in magnum, it has the concentration and balance to develop beautifully over 15–20 years, gaining more complexity and tertiary notes with time in the cellar.
Production
La Reine des Bois is sourced from some of Domaine de la Mordorée’s prime parcels in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where old-vine Grenache and its Rhône companions grow on classic soils of rolled pebbles (galets roulés), clay and sandy patches that store daytime heat and release it into the cool nights. The grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with rigorous sorting to ensure only perfectly healthy bunches make it into the final blend. Vinification focuses on preserving purity and terroir expression: gentle extraction during fermentation and élevage in a combination of inert vessels and carefully chosen larger barrels or foudres helps frame the wine’s natural power without overwhelming it with oak.
Food & Serving
This magnum of La Reine des Bois 2020 is a superb centerpiece for hearty, flavourful cuisine: think roasted lamb with rosemary, beef ribeye, duck breast with cherry or fig, game dishes, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with Provençal-inspired fare such as herb-roasted vegetables, wild mushroom dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F); in magnum format, the wine benefits from a bit of air, so decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, particularly in its youth, to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfurl.
Producer
Domaine de la Mordorée is one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected modern estates, known for its meticulous vineyard work and consistently high-performing wines from appellations such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Lirac and Tavel. Founded in the late 20th century, the domaine quickly built a reputation for combining traditional Rhône character with precision and elegance. Through low yields, careful parcel selection and a strong focus on environmental respect, Mordorée has become a reference point in the Southern Rhône, with La Reine des Bois standing as its flagship Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a regular recipient of top scores from international critics.
