Domaine de la Janasse, Principauté d'Orange Terre de Bussière 2022

Domaine de la Janasse Terre de Bussière 2022 is a beautifully structured southern French red from the Principauté d’Orange, combining the supple delicacy of Merlot with the warmth and intensity associated with the Rhône Valley. Its appealing balance of dark fruit, spice and savoury complexity makes it an approachable wine today, while its oak maturation adds extra depth and polish.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby-red colour with rich purple highlights. On the nose, it offers generous aromas of blackberries, black cherries and plums, complemented by subtle notes of leather, spice and toasted oak. The palate is full-bodied yet well balanced, with ripe tannins, concentrated dark fruit and a gently savoury finish that reflects its southern character. Thanks to its structure and oak ageing, the 2022 vintage can develop further over the next five to seven years. It is already enjoyable with a short period of aeration, but additional bottle age will bring greater integration and complexity.

Production
Terre de Bussière is produced from Domaine de la Janasse’s diverse vineyard holdings in the southern Rhône, where the warm Mediterranean climate helps the grapes achieve ripe fruit character and generous concentration. The cuvée brings together Merlot with southern French varieties, creating a balance between freshness, dark-fruited softness and regional strength. The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness and vinified in a classic style before ageing for 12 months in oak, 30% of which is new, adding discreet toast, structure and depth.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the wine to breathe. It pairs particularly well with grilled or roasted red meats, lamb, beef stew, sausages, hearty mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended when serving the wine young, while older bottles should be poured carefully to preserve their developing aromas.

Producer
Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1967 when Aimé Sabon took over the family vineyards in Courthézon and began producing wine independently rather than supplying grapes to a cooperative. What began with 15 hectares has grown to around 90 hectares, now managed with the help of his children Christophe and Isabelle Sabon. With more than 60 separate parcels, the estate benefits from a remarkable mosaic of terroirs, which contributes to the complexity of its wines and has helped make La Janasse one of the most respected names in the southern Rhône, particularly in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
