Description
Domaine de la Janasse Terre d’Argile is a rich and characterful Côtes du Rhône Villages red, shaped by a generous blend of Rhône varieties and careful traditional winemaking. Its name refers to the clay-rich soils of the vineyard, while the cuvée is distinguished by concentrated dark-fruit aromas, a full-bodied texture and impressive depth. The 2024 vintage offers a youthful expression of this southern Rhône style, with plenty of fruit and structure for further development.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, this wine opens with inviting aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum and dark berries, complemented by savoury notes reminiscent of tapenade, herbs and gentle spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and fleshy, with a supple yet concentrated texture. Layers of mature fruit are balanced by firm structure and a long, persistent finish, giving the wine both richness and freshness.
The 2024 can be enjoyed for its expressive fruit in its youth, but its concentration and oak maturation should allow it to develop additional savoury complexity over the coming years. Decanting will help reveal its aromas and soften its youthful structure.
Production
The wine is produced from a southern Rhône blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan, grown in clay-rich terroir. The grapes are harvested by hand, with selection carried out in the vineyard to ensure only healthy, ripe fruit is used. Approximately 75% of the fruit is destemmed before a maceration lasting 18 to 21 days, during which the cap is manually punched down each day. The wine is matured for 12 months: Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan are aged in barrels, one-third of which are new, while the Grenache is matured in larger wooden vats.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for Provençal and Mediterranean cuisine, Terre d’Argile pairs particularly well with lamb, grilled or braised beef, duck, game and hearty stews. Its savoury character also works beautifully with tapenade, ratatouille, roasted vegetables and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. A 30–60 minute decant is recommended when serving the wine young, while older bottles may require gentler decanting to preserve their development.
Producer
Domaine de la Janasse is a respected family estate in the southern Rhône, based near Courthézon and best known for its expressive Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Rhône Valley wines. Founded in the 1970s by Aimé Sabon, the domaine has grown into one of the region’s recognised producers while maintaining a strong focus on careful vineyard work, low-intervention handling and traditional Rhône varieties. Its wines are valued for combining generous fruit, terroir character and the structure needed for ageing.
