Description
Domaine de la Janasse’s 2024 Côtes du Rhône is an elegant and supple red with excellent structure, expressive fresh red-fruit character and a subtle liquorice finish. Produced by one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected estates, it offers an approachable introduction to the Sabon family’s refined, terroir-focused style.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a bright ruby-red colour. On the nose, it reveals inviting aromas of fresh red fruit, with ripe strawberries at the forefront. The palate is smooth and well balanced, combining a pleasing structure with juicy fruit and medium tannins. A delicate note of liquorice adds depth and character to the finish.
Enjoyable in its youth for its freshness and fruit-forward style, the 2024 Côtes du Rhône should also develop added savoury complexity over the next few years. It is best appreciated while its vibrant red-fruit profile is at its most expressive.
Production
Domaine de la Janasse’s vineyards are spread across more than 60 parcels, creating a mosaic of Rhône terroirs and contributing complexity to the estate’s blends. The grapes are crushed to a significant extent before undergoing a 9–15-day maceration on the skins. Following fermentation, the wine matures in oak barrels for 6–9 months, allowing its structure and complexity to develop while preserving its elegant, fruit-driven character.
Food & Serving
A versatile choice for grilled red meat, roast lamb, burgers and game dishes, particularly preparations with herbs or savoury sauces. Serve lightly cool at around 16–18°C. Decanting is not essential, but a short decant of 20–30 minutes can help open the aromas and soften the tannins, especially when served with a hearty meal.
Producer
Domaine de la Janasse was founded in 1967, when Aimé Sabon took over the family vineyards in Courthézon and chose to establish his own estate rather than continue supplying grapes to a cooperative. From its original 15 hectares, the domaine has grown to approximately 90 hectares. Christophe Sabon joined his father in 1991, followed by his daughter Isabelle in 2001. Thanks to its highly fragmented vineyard holdings and diverse terroirs, Domaine de la Janasse has become one of the leading names of the southern Rhône, particularly renowned for its Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines and distinctive cuvées such as Chaupin, Les Garrigues, Terre d’Argile and Terre de Bussières.
