Domaine de la Janasse’s 2023 Côtes du Rhône is an elegant, supple red that combines vibrant red-fruit character with the depth and structure associated with this respected Rhône producer. Made from a mosaic of terroirs around Courthézon, it offers an approachable expression of the southern Rhône, with ripe strawberry aromas and a refined hint of liquorice on the finish.

Tasting Notes
Bright and inviting in the glass, the wine opens with seductive aromas of fresh red fruit, led by ripe strawberries. On the palate, it is smooth and well balanced, with a graceful structure, moderate tannins and generous fruit. A subtle liquorice note emerges in the finish, adding depth and character without overshadowing the wine’s fresh, elegant style. Enjoyable in its youth for its supple fruit and accessible texture, the 2023 can also develop additional savoury complexity over the next few years when stored in a cool, dark cellar.

Production
The wine reflects Domaine de la Janasse’s highly fragmented vineyard holdings, with more than 60 parcels creating a mosaic of different Rhône terroirs. The grapes are 80% crushed before undergoing a 9- to 15-day maceration on the skins, allowing colour, aroma and structure to develop. After fermentation, the wine is aged for approximately six to nine months in oak barrels, helping to build complexity while preserving its fresh red-fruit character.

Food & Serving
A versatile partner for grilled red meat, roast lamb, sausages and hearty Mediterranean dishes. Its supple texture and moderate tannins also make it a natural match for game, including venison and other richly flavoured wild-meat dishes. Serve slightly cool, at around 16–18°C. Decanting is not essential for this approachable vintage, though 20–30 minutes in a decanter can help open the aromas when served young.

Producer
Founded in 1967 by Aimé Sabon, Domaine de la Janasse began when he took over his family’s vineyards in Courthézon, which had previously supplied grapes to a cooperative. He established his own estate and gradually expanded it from 15 to around 90 hectares. His son Christophe joined him in 1991, followed by his daughter Isabelle in 2001. Thanks to its diverse vineyard parcels and careful blending, Domaine de la Janasse has become one of the leading names in the southern Rhône and is particularly celebrated for its Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, including cuvées such as Chaupin, Les Garrigues, Terre d’Argile and Terre de Bussières.
