Description

Domaine de la Janasse Côtes du Rhône 2023 is an elegant, supple red wine from one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected family domaines. It combines a pleasing structure with vibrant red-fruit character, making it an accessible expression of the southern Rhône and an excellent choice for everyday dining. The domaine was founded in 1967, when Aimé Sabon decided to move beyond supplying grapes to a cooperative and establish his own estate.

Tasting Notes
Bright and inviting in the glass, this Côtes du Rhône opens with seductive aromas of fresh red fruit, particularly ripe strawberries. On the palate, it is smooth and well balanced, with a pleasing structure, moderate tannins and generous fruit. A subtle note of liquorice emerges on the finish, adding depth and character without compromising the wine’s elegant, easy-drinking style. The 2023 vintage is best enjoyed for its youthful freshness and supple texture, although its structure should allow it to develop additional softness and harmony over the next few years. It is not intended as a long-term cellaring wine, but will reward short-term ageing.

Production
The wine is made from Domaine de la Janasse’s mosaic of Rhône Valley terroirs, sourced from more than sixty individual parcels. This fragmented vineyard structure brings variety and complexity to the final blend. After harvesting, the grapes undergo skin maceration for approximately 9–15 days, helping to extract colour, aroma and moderate tannins. The wine is then matured in oak barrels for around 6–9 months before bottling.

Food & Serving
With its balanced tannins and generous red-fruit profile, this wine is a natural match for grilled meats, roast or braised red meat, sausages and game dishes. It also works well with hearty Mediterranean cooking, including herb-seasoned vegetables and tomato-based dishes. Serve lightly cool at around 16–18°C. Decanting is not essential for this youthful, supple wine, though a brief 20–30 minute decant can help open its aromas before serving.

Producer
Domaine de la Janasse began in 1967, when Aimé Sabon established the estate around the family farm in La Janasse, near Courthézon. From its original 15 hectares, the domaine has grown to approximately 90 hectares, with Aimé’s son Christophe joining in 1991 and his daughter Isabelle becoming part of the team ten years later. Thanks to its diverse collection of parcels and terroirs, Domaine de la Janasse has earned a strong reputation in the southern Rhône and is regarded as one of the leading estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, producing distinguished cuvées such as Chaupin, Les Garrigues, Terre d’Argile and Terre de Bussières.
