Description
Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2024 is a powerful, richly concentrated red from one of the appellation’s most respected estates. It combines ripe cherry and blueberry fruit with firm tannins, remarkable breadth and a persistent finish. The cuvée reflects Domaine de la Janasse’s long-standing commitment to expressing the diverse terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape through traditional winemaking.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep, generous colour, followed by an expressive nose of ripe red and dark berries, with cherries and blueberries at the forefront. On the palate it is broad and supple, marked by very mature fruit, substantial concentration and powerful yet well-integrated tannins. The finish is long and impressive, leaving a lasting impression of dark fruit and structure.
Its concentration and tannic backbone suggest excellent cellaring potential. While approachable with decanting, the wine should develop additional complexity and harmony over the coming years, rewarding patience in the cellar.
Production
The wine comes from Domaine de la Janasse’s mosaic of more than sixty individual parcels around Courthézon, where varied terroirs contribute complexity to the final cuvée. It is made according to the classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape method, with maturation taking place in a combination of 40% new oak barrels and 60% large foudres. The grape varieties are not specified in the available product information.
Food & Serving
This full-bodied Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a natural match for richly flavoured dishes such as roast lamb, beef or venison, slow-cooked stews, grilled meats and hearty Provençal cuisine. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for one to two hours when enjoying the wine young, particularly to soften the tannins and allow its layered fruit character to open; older bottles should be decanted carefully and briefly, if at all.
Producer
Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1967 when Aimé Sabon took over his family’s vineyards in Courthézon and chose to create an independent estate rather than continue sending the grapes to a cooperative. From its beginnings with 15 hectares, the domaine has grown to approximately 90 hectares, with Christophe Sabon joining his father in 1991 and Isabelle becoming part of the team ten years later. Thanks to its fragmented vineyard holdings and wide range of terroirs, Domaine de la Janasse has become one of the leading names and recognised gems of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
