Description

Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2023 is a powerful, richly concentrated Rhône red from one of the appellation’s most respected estates. Made from old vines across a mosaic of more than 60 parcels, it combines generous, ripe fruit with impressive structure and a remarkably long finish.

Tasting Notes
Deep and intensely coloured in the glass, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape opens with expressive aromas of ripe cherries, blueberries and dark berry fruit, supported by subtle spice and the warm, sun-soaked character typical of the southern Rhône. The palate is broad and full-bodied, with notably mature fruit, powerful tannins and a plush yet balanced texture. Its finish lingers for around a minute, revealing the wine’s considerable concentration and depth. The 2023 vintage has the structure and fruit intensity to develop beautifully in bottle. It can be enjoyed after decanting while young, but should gain further complexity over the next 10–15 years and may evolve well beyond that in a good cellar.

Production
The wine reflects Domaine de la Janasse’s fragmented Châteauneuf-du-Pape holdings, where more than 60 parcels create a complex mosaic of terroirs. The estate’s old vines contribute concentration and depth, while the classic Rhône approach allows the character of the fruit and site to take centre stage. Following traditional vinification, the wine is matured in a combination of vessels: approximately 40% in new oak barrels and 60% in large oak foudres, bringing structure and polish without overwhelming the ripe fruit.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for hearty, flavourful dishes such as slow-roasted lamb, beef short ribs, venison, duck with berry sauce or a rich Provençal stew. It also works well with mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours when drinking young to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s aromatic complexity to unfold.

Producer
Founded in 1967 by Aimé Sabon, Domaine de la Janasse takes its name from the family farm in Courthézon. What began with 15 hectares has grown to around 90 hectares, with Aimé’s son Christophe joining the estate in 1991 and his daughter Isabelle becoming part of the team ten years later. The domaine’s diverse parcels and distinctive cuvées—including Chaupin, Les Garrigues, Terre d’Argile and Terre de Bussières—have helped establish Domaine de la Janasse as one of the leading names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
