Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2022 is a powerful, richly concentrated Rhône red from one of the appellation’s most respected estates. Made in the classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape style and matured partly in new oak, it combines ripe dark fruit with impressive structure and depth. The Vieilles Vignes designation highlights the traditional character and concentration associated with older-vine parcels.

Tasting Notes
Deep and intensely coloured in the glass, this 2022 vintage opens with generous aromas of ripe cherries and blueberries, accompanied by layers of dark fruit and subtle oak nuances. On the palate, it is broad, full-bodied and remarkably smooth in texture, while powerful tannins provide firmness and shape. The fruit is notably mature and expressive, leading to a long, persistent finish. Although already compelling, this is a wine with the concentration and tannic structure to develop further in bottle. It should drink beautifully over the next 8–15 years, with careful cellaring allowing the fruit, oak and savoury complexity to knit together.

Production
The wine comes from Domaine de la Janasse’s mosaic of more than sixty parcels around Courthézon, where the diversity of Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroirs contributes complexity to the final blend. Produced according to the classic method, it is matured in a combination of 40% new oak barrels and 60% large oak foudres. This combination adds depth and polish while preserving the wine’s ripe fruit character and distinctive Rhône expression.

Food & Serving
Its generous fruit and firm tannins make it a natural match for hearty dishes such as roast lamb, beef, venison, duck and slow-cooked stews. It also pairs well with Provençal cuisine, grilled meats and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours when enjoying the wine young; older bottles should be decanted carefully, primarily to remove any sediment.

Producer
Domaine de la Janasse was founded in 1967 by Aimé Sabon, who took over the family’s vineyards in Courthézon and established his own winery rather than continuing to supply grapes to a cooperative. From its beginnings with around 15 hectares, the estate has grown to approximately 90 hectares, with Christophe Sabon joining his father in 1991 and Isabelle becoming part of the team ten years later. Thanks to its fragmented holdings and varied terroirs, Domaine de la Janasse has become one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s leading estates, known for both its classic cuvées and distinctive single-terroir bottlings.
