Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2022 is a powerful, richly concentrated Rhône red from one of the appellation’s most respected estates. It combines ripe dark fruit with firm tannins, remarkable breadth and a finish that lingers for several minutes. The Vieilles Vignes cuvée expresses the depth and complexity that have made Janasse a benchmark producer in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Tasting Notes
Deep and richly coloured in the glass, this 2022 shows an intense nose of kirsch, blueberry and very ripe dark fruit, complemented by subtle spice and garrigue-like notes. The palate is broad, full-bodied and generous, with a soft, mature fruit profile supported by powerful, well-structured tannins. Its impressive concentration leads to a remarkably long finish. Although already compelling, the wine has the structure and fruit concentration to develop further in bottle over the next decade or more under suitable cellaring conditions.

Production
The wine is sourced from Domaine de la Janasse’s highly fragmented holdings, comprising more than sixty parcels and a mosaic of Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroirs. It is made in the classic style of the appellation, with the fruit vinified to preserve its depth and ripe character before maturation in a combination of 40% new oak barrels and 60% large oak foudres. Specific harvesting and grape-variety details are not provided.

Food & Serving
Its richness and firm tannins make it an excellent partner for slow-roasted lamb, beef short ribs, venison, game birds and hearty Provençal dishes featuring herbs, garlic and olives. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for one to two hours when drinking young to allow the aromas to open and the tannins to integrate; older bottles should be handled more gently and decanted only if necessary to remove sediment.

Producer
Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1967, when Aimé Sabon took over his family’s vineyards in Courthézon and decided to bottle and develop the estate’s own wines rather than continue supplying grapes to a cooperative. From its original 15 hectares, the domaine has grown to around 90 hectares, with Christophe Sabon joining his father in 1991 and Isabelle later becoming part of the team. Thanks to its diverse parcels and meticulous work, Janasse has become one of the leading names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, producing both complex assemblages and distinctive cuvées such as Chaupin, Les Garrigues, Terre d’Argile and Terre de Bussières.
