Description
Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2021 is a powerful and richly textured Rhône red, prized for its remarkable concentration and depth of fruit. Made from old vines across the estate’s diverse Châteauneuf-du-Pape parcels, it combines generous southern Rhône character with firm structure and a long, polished finish. It is a classic expression from one of the appellation’s most respected modern estates.
Tasting Notes
Deep and richly coloured in the glass, this Vieilles Vignes opens with an expressive nose of ripe cherries and blueberries, complemented by hints of spice, herbs and well-integrated oak. The palate is broad, full-bodied and impressively concentrated, with layers of mature dark fruit supported by powerful yet rounded tannins. A persistent, oak-kissed finish gives the wine considerable length and complexity.
Although already compelling in its youth, the wine’s concentration, tannic structure and balanced fruit suggest excellent cellaring potential. It should develop additional savoury and earthy complexity over the next 10–15 years, and potentially longer under suitable conditions.
Production
The wine is sourced from Domaine de la Janasse’s highly fragmented estate, comprising more than 60 parcels and a mosaic of Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroirs. This diversity contributes complexity to the final blend, while the old vines provide depth and concentration. Produced according to a traditional approach, the wine is matured in a combination of 40% new oak barrels and 60% large oak foudres, allowing the ripe fruit and structured palate to retain their prominence while gaining polish and length.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gently up to temperature. Decanting for one to two hours is recommended, particularly in its youth, to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s aromatic depth. Its richness and structure make it an excellent partner for roast lamb, beef, game, hearty stews, grilled meats and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1967 when Aimé Sabon took over his family’s vineyards in Courthézon and chose to create an independent estate rather than continue supplying grapes to a cooperative. From an initial 15 hectares, the domaine has grown to around 90 hectares, with Aimé’s son Christophe joining in 1991 and his daughter Isabelle becoming part of the team a decade later. The estate’s numerous parcels and varied terroirs are central to its identity, and cuvées such as Chaupin, Les Garrigues, Terre d’Argile and Terre de Bussières have helped establish Domaine de la Janasse as one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s standout producers.
