Description
Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2020 is a powerful and deeply concentrated Rhône red, combining ripe fruit, impressive structure and remarkable length. Made from old vines across a mosaic of Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroirs, it reflects both the appellation’s heritage and the Sabon family’s reputation for producing some of the region’s most distinguished wines.
Tasting Notes
The 2020 vintage has the structure and fruit concentration to develop beautifully in bottle. It can be enjoyed now after decanting, although further ageing over the next 10–15 years—or longer in a well-stored cellar—will allow the tannins to soften and the savoury complexity to emerge.
Production
The cuvée draws its character from old vines planted across more than sixty fragmented parcels, creating a complex mosaic of soils and microclimates in and around Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Domaine de la Janasse traditionally harvests its grapes by hand, allowing careful selection of healthy, ripe fruit. The wine is made according to a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape approach and matured with approximately 40% in new oak barrels and 60% in large oak foudres, combining depth and polish with the generous, full-bodied character of the vintage.
Food & Serving
This richly structured red is an excellent match for roasted or braised red meats, rack of lamb, beef stew and game such as venison. It also pairs well with Provençal dishes featuring herbs, garlic and slow-cooked vegetables, as well as mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C and decant for 1–2 hours when drinking young to open up the ripe fruit and soften the powerful tannins.
Producer
Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1967, when Aimé Sabon took over the family’s vineyards and began making wine independently rather than supplying grapes to a cooperative. Named after the family farm in Courthézon, the estate has grown from 15 hectares to around 90 hectares. Christophe Sabon joined his father in 1991, followed by Isabelle in 2001, and the family has since developed a highly respected portfolio built on diverse terroirs and distinctive cuvées such as Chaupin, Les Garrigues, Terre d’Argile and Terre de Bussières. Today, Domaine de la Janasse is regarded as one of the leading names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
