Description
Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2018 is a powerful, richly concentrated expression of one of the Southern Rhône’s most celebrated appellations. Made from old vines across a mosaic of more than 60 parcels, it combines ripe dark fruit, impressive structure and the polished generosity for which Domaine de la Janasse is renowned. The estate has grown from a modest 15 hectares in 1967 to one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s leading domaines.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to garnet in appearance, this full-bodied red opens with an intense, expressive nose of ripe cherries and blueberries, complemented by subtle spicy and savoury nuances. The palate is broad, supple and generously textured, with very mature fruit, powerful tannins and remarkable concentration. A long, persistent finish balances richness with structure. Although already compelling, the wine’s depth and tannic backbone suggest excellent ageing potential over the next 10–15 years, and potentially longer under ideal cellaring conditions.
Production
The Vieilles Vignes cuvée reflects the diversity of Domaine de la Janasse’s fragmented holdings around Courthézon, where varied soils and Mediterranean conditions contribute complexity to the final blend. The old vines produce naturally concentrated fruit, which is harvested with care before traditional vinification in the classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape style. The wine is matured with 40% in new oak barrels and 60% in large oak foudres, combining depth and textural richness with a measured preservation of the wine’s generous fruit character.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to come to temperature gradually. Its concentration and firm tannins make it an excellent partner for roast lamb, beef, venison, slow-cooked stews, grilled red meats and richly flavoured Mediterranean dishes with herbs and garlic. Decant for around 1–2 hours when drinking young to allow the aromas to open and the tannins to soften; mature bottles should be handled more carefully and may only need a short decant to remove any sediment.
Producer
Domaine de la Janasse was founded in 1967, when Aimé Sabon took over his family’s vineyards in Courthézon and chose to establish an independent estate rather than continue supplying grapes to a cooperative. Since 1991, his son Christophe has helped lead the domaine, later joined by his daughter Isabelle. From its original 15 hectares, the estate has expanded to around 90 hectares, spread across more than 60 parcels. This exceptional range of terroirs has made Domaine de la Janasse one of the most respected names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with distinguished cuvées including Chaupin, Les Garrigues, Terre d’Argile and Terre de Bussières.
